Today the topic of dual CPUs came up with one of my friends. I told him that I was thinking of getting another XP 1600+ CPU and a dual mobo, and in an evil/sarcastic tone  said something to the effect of "why get the same CPU?" I told him nicely that you need to use the same CPU. Upon saying that he looked over and said "Since when?!?", shocked that I thought that you need the same CPU. After a few more minutes of this, I said I'd ask around. So; Must you use the same XP (MP) CPU in a dual CPU rig? If so, has it always been that way? (Remember, I said that you should you the same CPU ;) )

eh?

You need 2 of the same clock speed.....as for the XP and MP. the MPs are made for duals and i don't think the XPs even support duals....

Well, that's what SMP implies..

Symettricaly mutliprocessing or something like that...

I heard rumors that of AMD you didn't have to have the same speed in, but I'll believe that when I see it. :)

*Moved to "AMD CPUs"

Picture this: Two processors, each chewing on half of a math problem. Processor one spits out the answer 100,000 (not accurate for say a 1.4 & 1.5) clock cycles before processor two...it means nothing to the busses that have to get the data in and out until both halves arrive at the same time....crash!

I do remember reading something about the tyan server mobo's being stable with two XP's. I wouldn't swear to it, I'm stuck in poverty with a t-bird for a while, so I'm not shopping.

You can use either athlon MPs or regular athlons but not XPs. Sometimes durons will work but why would you want to do that. Currently my friend is using regular 1.4 athlons in his 2 dualie boxes and they run excelent. You can even run 2 processors of different speeds as long as they have the same bus speed. I tried this very thing out on my buddies system using a 1.33 and a 1.4 athlon and it works without a hitch. For some odd reason both cpus run at 1.4; possibly due to there unlocked multipliers though they should run at different speeds. Overclocking is dificult with a dualie setup like this but it can be done with H-Odas Soft FSB by selecting pll chip ICS 9248-64. I havn't tried overclocking the board but I have heard it has been done so I'll give it a try.

Hey bender, if the 1.33 runs at 1.4 are they really different when all is said and done?

I wonder if the board is made to auto clock it up so the output cycles match...hmmm.

That'd be one way to get stability before the competition does.

I thought I read somewhere that you could run different speed Processors on a Dualy board, but that they both defaulted to the speed of the slowest CPU. Like say a dude has a 1.2 and a 1.4, the 1.4 would be casterated down to a 1.2 . I'm new to this dually thing so I wouldn't put money on it :P

I was able to use two differnet speed cpu's in my Thunder k7. I had to 1.2ghz MP. One with the multiplier set at 11 and the other set at 11.5. my bios reconized the different speeds but continued to work as normal. I will soon test to see if a xp at 1.4ghz and a mp at 1.2ghz will work together as well.
