View Full Version : ? about attaching RAM sinks
I'm getting a crystal orb for my GF3 Ti200 and while I'm at it I want to take off the ram sinks and put some ASII on them. Would using a small dab of superglue at the corners of the sink hold it on? I don't really want to buy thermal epoxy.
Thanks in advance.

I've heard bad things happen when you use superglue... I wouldn't recommend it... just my opinion though..;)

To attach the ramsinks with 2 dabs of superglue at the end of each ram stick is no problem. What you have to be real CAREFUL about is the ASII on the ramsinks. When you apply the ramsinks and put pressure on them to make the glue adhere ASII will come out the sides, do not let it get on any of the wires along ramsides ot you will kill your card.
here is a pic of my modded 7500 with sinks attached via superglue with ASII under them. Just use a thin even layer of ASII.

oops forgot pic but you should get the idea, just be careful with the ASII

<---- used superglue and Arctic Silver 2 to attach ramsinks. Just make sure to spread the ASII thin and try not to get it near the memory's leads.

I just replaced the factory...crap with ASII and super glue. The ASII comes VERY close to the RAM leads:eek: I think I may not have used enough ASII with a couple of the sinks, I was a bit paranoid of it spreading onto the leads. Everything is working ok. Haven't heard anything falling onto my sound card...yet.:D

I'm just wondering, did you put AS2 on the ramsinks or the ram itself?

I carefully spread ASII onto the ram:)
Merry Christmas!!
I have always disagreed with the superglue & ASII method. Ever wonder why clips for CPUs usually give 25lbs pressure? That's because one of the reasons is that you need a good amount of compression for the thermal compound to work. You really dont need to buy expensive thermal epoxy to do this. A good metal epoxy mixed with an equal amount of ASII will do a better job. If you are worried about shorting anything with whatever solution you choose all you have to do is mask anything you are afraid the goop will get into.

sonny's got it right, you need a good bond to make the thermal transfer it's best. using superglue works okay, but not optimal, i saw a difference of 3c between the two methods on my graphics ram alone. If you don't want to epoxy them down permanently then mix some standard thermal compound into the epoxy mixture before applying, make it about a 60/40 ratio of epoxy to grease and you'll still be able to remove them if you need to, but removal of the stuff from the ram itself is a bit harder
