Ok heres the deal.. first off thanks to supraway for reminding me of this :D

Ok now, I got my hands on a SCSI Cheetah (9.1gig I think thats the size) the model number is ST39102LC.

Now Im planning on using it to run some photo editting stuff... So I want to get a controler card for it. The mobo I have is decent, but a no namer... Now where do I look to find something for this drive? Ive spent hours online looking for anything I could find that might help but all o no avail. I am sure that there is something out there... I just have failed to find it... anyone have any ideas?

what kind of info are you looking for? Like "what SCSI controller card should I buy?" type info?

If yes, I think Adaptec makes about the best controller card around, but I'm no expert on them. Jon would be the authority here.

Yea I think that is pretty much what Im looking for....

LOL yea...I think so. =)

A wee bit bored...does it show?

As far as I know, and as I said, Adaptec has a long time standing relationship with quality controller cards. My old roomie had a SCSI card that was brand new for sale...$200 I beleive. He bought it for a Unix machine, then realized it wasn't compatable with Unix. If you like I'll ask if he still has it.

How do you know if its compatible? I thought that there was different types?

There are several different types of SCSI. I suggest you get a controller that is Ultra 160. They can run almost all SCSI devices available. The Adaptec 19160 is nice. You should also look at Tekram cards, they are good and often cheaper than Adaptec.

It sounds like Shadow's "roomie" was trying to run a special setup. As long as a card has drivers for your OS you will be fine.

Ok well Im getting some good answers. But unfortunatly.. Im still lost... Ive done a little searching for that Adaptec 19610 and it gives me some odd things that I honestly couldnt say what exactly what they were. I need a little more info. I honestly dont know squat about them. Any where I could read more about them? What exactly the differences are? anything?
thanks again

Tekram cards are about $100 cheaper and offer comparable performance to Adaptec cards. An added advantantage of Tekram cards is that they will come with cables and terminators, which will add $80 to an Adaptec card.

Get a tekram 390U3W for $180 and you are good to go...

OK, huge
Bump here...

Found the info on the drive... ok and I got sidetracked... :p

I have had this scsi hdd for sometime now... I would like to either get it running or sell it. I prefer to try to get it runnin first... SO.. I need a controler card for it.

These are the specs on the hdd, I know squat about these really...
Config Page (http://www.seagate.com/support/disc/scsi/st39102lc.html)
Spec Page (http://www.seagate.com/support/disc/specs/scsi/st39102lc.html)

So if anyone happens to know what I need, card info, etc, would be greatly appreciated... A site link to what exact cards that would be needed would be even more appreciated! :D

How much you willing to spend on a controller?

An Ultra SCSI-2 card is all you need for that drive but for future considerations I would go ahead and get an Ultra160 controller from Tekram or Mylex (both are cheap and good as Adaptec). Just depends on what you want to spend for.

IFMU

Quite honestly not alot... I was hoping for not more than 60, but from what Ive read so far, yea right like thatll happen... But how do you mean future considerations? Odds are I will get this controler and be done. I got the hdd in a trade.. didnt buy it... So Id like to keep the pricing down...

I am going to agree with Jon.
I would go with one of these:
http://www.tekram.com/hot_products.asp?Product=DC-390U3_Series
or the Adaptec 19160.
I don't know much about Mylex cards, so I can't say.
Either card is going to cost over $100:eek:

The reason we recomend the U160 is because they can run almost all SCSI devices availible right now. You can get a lower card like an Adaptec 3940 for less money, but they are still expensive. If you are going to buy a SCSI card you should get one that will last a while.

Well, to get the rated throughput of that hard drive it's going to cost a bit more than $60 for a controller. A 68 pin Ultra2 Wide SCSI controller is going to be around $100.

You could go with a lower rated card but it won't get the highest transfer rates available for the drive.

As far as future considerations, I just meant in case you plan on using SCSI in the future. Would make the most sense to get a good card so you could upgrade drives, etc. later, but if you don't plan on it, I understand cheap being first.

good gawd.. 235 was the cheapest for the tek card... good gawd.. they all that expensive? If so looks like theres gonna be a hdd for sale soon...

No, this does not seem stupid. It is confusing, even for those of use who use SCSI. There is narrow, wide, SCSI2, ultra-wide....and several more. That is another reason we recomend the U160 cards. Part of the standard for U160 is that it is compatable with all the others, so you don't have to worry about if it is wide or not.

I can't see ebay here ar work, I will look tonight from home. I think pricewatch had the 19160 for $145. Sometimes Dell will sell a refurb for less, you just have to find them on the web page.

Thanks :D

SCSI is confusing, I have 10 2.1GB disks that I have to sort through, some are LVD and some are not. LVD and non LVD dont mix, whoops. When its sorted im going to put together a 5-8 disk RAID system. But anyways, right now I have a 10KRPM drive, they are nice. I looked up the spec sheet for the drive you have, I think you may need an adapter for it, Im not certain about it but I used the adapters. Its an 80 pin connecter drive. I found the adapters on ebay. The specs say its a Ultra2 SCSI wide, so for best performance/compatibility I say get a card that supports that. I dont know how much this would be, but unless your going RAID get a simple card without it. Hope this helps.

Should do nicely. It is one step down from the 29160 and can do all the formats except U160 (and above)

Good card, often found in servers.
