I currently have 2 x 1GB Kingston Hyperx 6400 memory modules clocked at 910Mhz 4-4-4-12 timings on 2.2volts. When i touch them they start to burn my fingers after a couple of seconds. Is this too hot? Only the default heatsinks are fitted and i have no direct fan blowing onto them, but a 120mm cpu fan which is mounted on my thermalright ultra 120 extreme draws air away from them.
You can see what they look like here if it helps anything: http://www.hardcoreware.net/reviews/review-353-1.htm
:welcome: to OCF!!!
You have to aim a fan directly at the memory. Because of the fact that the modules are pretty close together, they create a dead spot, and no air will move there. Your CPU HSF is not cooling the RAM, but simply taking away the air near the RAM.
For 2.2V I would definitely get a fan in there.
From what I hear the Antec spotcool is pretty good, although I see lots of prople using the OCZ and Corsair memory coolers...

You certainly need to get some cooling in there.

This is what I have on my current rig. I didnt have problems, but I wanted it for peace of mind. It works like a champ!

^ does yours have a whine noise to it? Some people have sent theirs back
i had that problem with mine.if you aircool it isnt noticable really but with a near silent rig it was very annoying.
@OP i agree with Aja and Surfrider,if your modules are that hot you definately need some active cooling on them.
Relax the timings to 5-5-5-15 and back off the voltage? Free and quiet fix. If it takes a few seconds before it gets uncomfortable for the fingers its not extremely hot imo, i would be more afraid of the acoustics of those small fans.

I have a Neon Crab cooler, works well.

Ok great, thanks for everyones input. Think im gonna go with the OCZ XTC cooler.
IMHO you would be better off with a 120mm fan blowing on them... it moves more air and is pretty quiet

the xtc cooler works pretty good. if you have a big cpu cooler, good luck getting a 120mm, even an 80mm over em ;)

Yeah, thats exactly it - No space for another 120mm fan. I would put a desktop fan right over them if i could :P Besides, the xtc cooler looks good aswell. Are they known to be a bit noisy tho??
the ocz cooler is very quiet imho.it is what i switched to.the first one i picked up had a bad fan(frame hit the fan blade on one of the fans).the second has been great tho,its nearly silent and pushes a nice amount of air.
