I just built a new gaming rig for the kids, it is no screamer but i used some leftovers from my hubbies various upgrades etc and it is after all is said and done for my younger kids to use so it will not be overclocked.
AMD 5200+
M2N-SLI Deluxe
2GB PC 6400 DDR2
320GB hard drive
20x DVDRW
8600GTS
430 watt Coolermaster PSU
2x120mm case fans aswell as a 120mm fan on a scythe ninja.
My question is this, Will the PSU be up to the task of powering this rig or will it end up failing because of it being overloaded ?

430watts should be fine.

That "no screamer" rig built for your young children out of leftover parts is faster than the rigs used by many OCF members! :attn:

I know its better parts than in my rig.

I was not trying to insult anyone by saying it is no screamer in any way, it is just that my husband upgrades his computers way too often and ends up with parts filling our whole hall closet LOL.
When compared to his main system it is just a tad slow....

Evil,
I think it's 19 amps if it's this one:

If it's an older one, it's hard to tell. You thinking what I'm thinking?
i think it will be fine, 18amps is the minimum iirc

well im thinking it might be for a older pc that uses the 5v rail. honastly i dont know if 19amps would be enough for that rig. i do know that back in the day for stock P4's no matter what speed. they needed a min of 16 or 18amps on the 12v rail.
i mean since they have it run the rig with that psu. if they get sudden BSOD's or restarts or even radom lock ups. then they need to look at a new psu.
if they look a gettign a new psu. these 2 here would be the best to go with for non oced and low price.

both have solid 12v rails. imo i would nab the corsair unit for the Customer service/rma over antec. both well worth the money...

Exactly. The Coolermaster isn't one to recommend and may not put out the power advertised. That GTX is probably 12 - 14 amps on the 12v even if the power supply honestly put's out 19 amps 12v.
To me, it's not worth risking a $500+ $300 vid card or the rest of the system.

Nettie, I'm pretty sure you didn't insult anyone. I just sometimes find humor in odd places and your post was one example. :)

Assuming thats a 256MB 8600GTS and a 2.6GHz Windsor 5200+,
Recommended PSU Wattage: 328w
Amperage (combined)
+3.3V +5V +12V
7.6 A 11.0 A 20.6 A
I'd say spend some money on a new one to be safe.

Any of those should be good, the last one would be best.

Sorry, just saw it's a GTS and not a GTX. My bad...........but I still agree a better power supply is in order.

i wouldn't trust a coolermaster psu. LOL
also, for gaming, i'd downgrade the cpu to something like a 3600+ and just OC it and get a 8800GT instead of the 8600gts.

I am not buying anything new, this is just being made out of my hubbies extra parts so i dont exactly get to choose which to use lol.
If i was buying the parts new i sure as heck wouldnt be using an old AMD CPU it would be a C2D :) The 8600GTS is nothing great but it was free from work :)
The 12v rail has 21 amps....

its its got 21amp then run it for a while and orthos stress it. then let them play, as like i said if it starts restarting. then get a new one, the video card doent have a pcie plug so its drawing its power thru the motherboard.

8600gts for free? Where do you work?

Evilsizer, every 8600GTS I've ever seen does require a PCIE plug. I know for a fact that mine does, at least.
NettieZoom: An X2 5200+ isn't just "some old CPU"... It's a 2.6GHz (or 2.7GHz if it's the newer Brisbane core) dual core... Nor is an 8600GTS exactly low-end...
Anyway, 21A is cutting it pretty darn close... You can spend ~$50 now on a better PSU (or nothing if you find a better one in the "junk"), or lose ~$120 on the chance it borks the GPU.

Nettie,
Steal your husband's power supply and give him the Coolermaster. :)
Do like Evil said, stress it with Orthos for a while, see what happens. Twenty one amps on a Coolermaster may be only half that on an old quality unit "real time."
Using that Coolermaster on a nice setup like that is like taking a shower and putting your dirty underwear back on, whether the parts were free or not........just my opinion.

Also Nettie, you might keep an eye out in the Classifieds and see if you run across a good deal on a quality psu. I've bought several that way myself and saved me some money. :D

Lol i was just looking through the classifieds for a PSU....Thanks
My husband has extras of about everything except a better PSU :(
He would be slightly upset to come home to find his modular 750 watt PSU stolen lol
We have 5 kids so keeping everyone in computers gets to be a pain.
If i dont find a decent PSU on the classifieds i will just break down and buy one from Newegg, i was just hoping to save a few bucks by using the old Coolermaster i had on hand.
I call the 5200+ old just because my husband had bought it when they first came out so it is quite literally getting old now.
Yes, the 8600 does have a Pcie plug.
