my geforce 2 mx chip is a little concave on the middle, how far can i got before i ruin the chip? is there a guide for lapping these ?
first I lapped mine enough so that the printed logo and stuff was gone. Then I went hog wild and lapped it until I could see the light metallic outline of the chip itself, and there I stopped.
Helped my temps a LOT, and was easy to do. Just stop after taking off the printed stuff if you want to play it safe.
Not much of a guide is needed-take fine grit sandpaper, I used 600 grit, and wrap it around something that will fit on the core and is very flat. Then go to town! Slowly.:)

thats might be the heat spreader inside the chip you got, i just want to get it flat, but i know middle is concave so the HSF only contacts the sides of the chip.
Actually, it was the deep, coppery color that indicates the back of the GPU core. At least, I'm pretty sure it was teh back of the core.
A little bit farther and I'd have been sanding transitor junctions!:) lol I've killed a card from overzealous sanding a while ago, I sure don't want a repeat:)
I had to sand mine quite a bit to get it as flat as I wanted it. I've yet to see a GPU core that was flat enough out of the box- flatness is not a priority when they makes the things, I guess!
