View Full Version : 8600 GTS--Amazing OC Potential

I've had my EVGEA 8600 GTS for awhile now and for a bit it seemd as though I was banging my head against the wall. I had read it was a great peformer, and though it was on some games it wasnt so much on others (*ahem* Crysis). It felt a lot like this: :bang head

But then I decided to OC it, and it is incredible. Very stable, even at high clocks, and now even Crysis in DX10 can run on very high with stable, easily playable FPS.

Anyone else know about this? Cause I cant believe how well this thing performs with a little OC'ing :bday:

To what have you OC'd it, can you post a Crysis Time demo, what resolution are you running Crysis at and what is your ave FPS?
Not that I'm not believing you but this must be a 8600 GTS with a 8800 GTX GPU if you can run Crysis at very high settings comfortably (>40 FPS)

There is the misinterpretation. For me comfortably is like 30+. It is OC'd to 25 mhz over the stock settings, on a 19 inch monitor. Avg. FPS on Medium settings=55
On very high settings: 34

Frankly that is impossible, I get an ave of 35 with a E6750 OC'd to 3.6 and a 8800 GT at 700/1000/1750 on most features on very high settings, some on high that does not matter...

Hehe kinda gotta agree. 25mhz oc you wont notice a difference on anything. I wanna see some pics ;p

Maybe he meant 250 Mhz lol

Still shouldn't play that high (DX 10, Very High, AND PLAYABLE?)

I call BS unless you're running it at 320x240

I'm running Crysis on high settings with a 7900GTOC and it runs comfortably, saying that every so often it jumps a little (as if its thinking for a few milliseconds), so I wouldn't say its impossible.

theres no WAY the person in the OP could run crysis on very high all settings (only avaliable in vista cus of dx10) at even a res of 1280x1024... on my 8800gts i grab a wopping oh 12fps with thoes settings.

Tell me about it, I thought this 8800GT is going to stand up to what Crysis demands...the game is brutal on resources...I need another 2 GT's to tackle the game;)

and for thoes who dont kno the Ariel atom is arguably the fastest car 0-60 with a time of 2.5-2.9 secs... depending on how fast you can shift ... google it

I get around 11 fps avg. @ 1680 * 1050 with everything on high, hacked ¨very high¨ cuts it in half :(.

I thought very high was only available on VISTA?

Anyway, on my 320GTS I was getting 40-70 fps on a mix of med & high settings @ 1280x1024.

My GT will be here on Monday. Eagerly awaiting very high settings at 1600x1200, or 1280x960 w/ 2xAA...I hope.

Now, i know there are some haters here, but at 1280x1024, with 8600GT SLI, I sit around 35fps avg on medium settings at stock speeds, so if anything, I can be a testament that the OP's post isn't in line realistically.

However, welcome sawman3, and don't let a few rude comments sway you away from here. There are some douches no matter where you go, but for what we do, this place has some of the best info around.

On very high settings: 34

The difference between stock speed and 25MHz more would be very little and not very noticeable unless you are running tests/benchmarks. Even a difference of going from say 600 to 700 (100MHz increase)is only an improvement of 16% which is about where it would be noticeable.

I'm running Crysis on high settings with a 7900GTOC and it runs comfortably, saying that every so often it jumps a little (as if its thinking for a few milliseconds), so I wouldn't say its impossible.

I had a 7950GT 512MB overclocked to 740 core and the game wasn't very playable/comfortable at high. On medium it ran perfectly fine, but high put the frame rate down to like 20FPS, so I have to wonder about the validity of your statement. Obviously somebody will say "well comfortable is all subjective." 30 FPS is plenty for me. I'm happy if I'm at or above that.

Excellent, this is what I've been waiting for...I hate Vista's sensitivity to OC and it's random errors, with this I can go back to XP and still get the eye candy on Crysis:beer:

It's called a Cvar/ini tweak. I wouldn't have said it unless it was true. Very high gets me about 20 constant, with dips to 18-19, high gets me over 20 constant, with highs of 25-30+.

Edit: Maybe the OP got confused as to what setting he had the game on? You guys are brutal.

To the OP:

You can go way higher than 25mhz on the core and memory. With my 8800GTS my stock speeds are 513mhz on the core and 792mhz memory. I overclocked the core 143mhz and the memory 253mhz. I'm sure you could get at least 80-100 more mhz out of both the core and memory. Just keep it slow and go about 5-10mhz at a time, and then benchmark it to make sure no artifacts are showing, and keep an eye on your heat as well. Try not to let your GPU get above 90c and you should be fine.

That tweak to allow you to set Crysis to very high in XP can't be comparable to setting the game to very high in VISTA. I mean DX10 isn't available in XP, so you won't be enabling the same eye-candy in the game.

Am I wrong or am I missing something?

I wasn't referring to anyone that posted here. I meant in general no matter where you go (i can be douchey at times, and I'll be the first to admit it). I did see that most, if not all the people who got heated apologized, and it takes a bigger person to apologize. Kudos. I just wanted to say that although people here may come off harsh (they apparently apologize) the info here cannot be beat.

That being said, I cannot wait to see some reference material from the OP.

After reading this i went and ran the crysis demo on my kids computer.

5200+ @ 2.9ghz
2GB DDR2 800
8600GTS with about a %15 OC on core and 10% on mem
Vista Ultimate

I got 15-20 FPS max @ 1680X1050 using med settings

Seemed like a slide show compared to my 8800 hehe
