View Full Version : Ways to speed up network file transfer
Hi guys,
I transfer alot of files over my network including watching video's and stuff.
What would be the best way to speed up transfer? Right now my Router is 10/100 and my 8 port Switch into my room is 10/100...
All of my computers have 10/100/1000 NIC's, so if I got a 10/100/1000 Switch, would it speed up transfers (all computers are attached in my room, to the switch) to my computer's attached to the switch?
Is bumping from 100mbs to 1000mbs significant in terms of throughput? I mean right now vista reports I transfer about 8MB/s...would bumping to a Gigabit switch mean *theoretically* close to 80MB/s?
Thanks, ps2cho

Yes, a gigabit switch would be necessary for any significant performance improvements. However typical results are around 30 MB/s, not 80 MB/s. Very few consumer drives hit 80 MB/s, so that'd generally be impossible to achieve even if everything else was working to theoretical perfection, which doesn't happen in any case. Gigabit saturation presents much more of a challenge than 100 Mb/s does.

hi
beside for a giga network, it would be better to get cables cat6, your network, then can get a little plus, if set to giga with cat5
you'll link to a giga for a minute before to turn back to a "normal" 100mb ...
and yes a routeur or a switch help a bit ;)
my 2 cts here ...

adding in faster drives or an hardware array (Sata raid / sci etc) will help performance alot too. if you're running intel, you can possibly do matrix as well.
Upgrading to gigabit took me from around 6-7MBps sustained on large files to over 30-40MBps sustained. You definitely want to upgrade your switch if you already have the adapters.
if you use ssh, you can turn on compression. i don't think smb/cifs has that option tho.

It won't help performance unless you upgrade to gigabit first -- any desktop drive made in the last few years can exceed the performance of 100 Mb/s networking (if it's working correctly). Once you have gigabit working and hitting somewhere around your drive speed, then sure, if you have fast drives / arrays on both ends you can hope for some additional improvement, and not otherwise.
