I've been asked a very interesting question... and thought I's post it out here since cable modems are not my specialty. My take on it would be a driver problem, but I'm not sure about that. This is what the e-mail says:

i just got a cable modem so when i boot up my PC im already online, but after like 30 minutes and sometimes sooner a blue screen pops and, when i press enter i go back to my screen but without the connection to the net. anyone have this happen to them before? help me please!

Anyone have any ideas??? As I said, my thought is a driver problem, but don't have experience with cable modems.

check your seat on your card or swap it out, i kinda would suspect that your problem is with the card, but just guess based on what ive seen, if it was the driver usually you would know at connect time, im guessing it could be when it heats up its failing?

umm..I'm pretty sure he said cable modem.

Is it USB? and by chance are they running ME?

that's been a nightmare for me......I hate to sound like a typical tech and suggest fomat, but how long has this person been using this install?

If it's via a nic, has the nic always been installed, or was it just installed with the modem? Can he/she run the system w/o problems with the nic installed but modem unplugged from it?

Id have to go with shadow here... Sounds like a nic driver problem. but it could also be in the IE/Windows settings somewhere too... And the above questions should be answered...

This is what he says:

yes it is USB , how do i fix the NIC driver?
i discovered that after the blue screen thing, my MSN messenger still works, but thats it, nothing else does, not my AIM or anything
--------------------------------------------------

Sounds very interesting to me. I've never gotten a BSOD over a bady seated card, just a system lock-up. Plus, it's USB. As far as the MSN Messenger working but nothing else... he's got me. But if he's running Win ME I think that explains a lot, the networking settings for ME aren't quite up to par with other OSes.

actually it turns out MSN messenger doesnt work after all, just looked like it, when i opened it it said i needed to sign in,
actually when the blue screen pops up it says alot of stuff, with numbers and other things, ill write it down and post it maybe it will help to find out what the problem is

if it's USB, it has nothing to do with a nic card....he probably doesn't even have a nic card installed.

sounds like USB driver issues....is there a newer driver available for the modem?

alright here is exactly what the blue screen says, hopefully this will pinpoint the problem...

An exception has occurred at 0028:C154F5B0 in VxD
MSTCP (01) + 00009000
this was called from 0028:C001C27C in VxD
ND1S (01) + 00004590
it may be possible to continue normally
press any key to continue
press ALT+CTRL+DELETE to restart your computer

well that is exactly what it says, any help now?

Also a Q, would it be better if i just got an ethernet card?maybe it will solve the problem
also if i uprade to XP think that will somehow stop it?

In the error, MSTCP is Microsoft TCP Networking, and ND1S (should be NDIS) is probably either the ndis.sys or ndiswan.sys files which are causing problems. Going through TCP/IP settings, you should make sure "Obtain IP Address Automatically" is enabled, DHCP should be enabled, and find DNS server automatically should also be enabled. Worst case scenario, you would either install Windows over itself, or do a full, clean installation of whatever version of windows is prefered.

hey again, since then the problem has ceased to happening alot but not that much, but still happens sometimes, im gonna try getting windows XP, to try and stop it,

today it happened again but instead of MSTCP being mention in the error VIP is in there, what does that mean?and then when i got back it said i had lost the lease to my IP address, i also have no idea what that means nor how to fix any of these, can any1 help me?

Shot in the dark here but if you have a usb adaptor with that modem look under network/usb adaptor/prop/advance and see if (link status wakeup) is enabled. Some people were losing their connection when this was disabled.

nah didnt see link status wakeup, all i saw was some buffers, and a value that was set to 32

I got those same errors just after I installed Easy CD Creater 5.0 Platinum!

Long Shot, but did you install that recently?

I could hit "continue" few times and the system would boot up, but everytime I rebooted I would get the error.

I ended up unistalling it and getting a new copy and it works fine now:)
