You want to make sure your heatsink is seated properly!
An Alpha PAL8045 or a Glaciator 2 with an 80 mm fan will also drop your temps a lot.

Now there is a G-Lite that has the same dezign as the Glaciator 2 but its aluminum & about 2-3 times lighter than the glaciator 2 and performes almost the same
OUCH!
Heatsink lapped?
Thin layer of thermal compound between core and cpu die?
Fan blowing into sink or away from?
GOOD LUCK!

That looks like asus probe from memory, so it may actually be reporting higher then the chip is actually.
To give you an idea, a machine I had in at the workshop had an a7v133c with latest bios (1007) and it reported 61' in asus probe
and 52' using "Hardware Sensors Monitor", a program which claims to give a more accurate reading.
That is 9' difference which brings yours back to reletivly ok.
You should try getting an externel temp probe on there.
i would actually point to the high ambient temperature inside the case as the cause of the problem (assuming the thermosistor is correct). What sort of case ventilation do you have? Its no use blowing recycled air onto the CPU heatsink
What sort of temps do you get with the case closed? does the heatsink feel warm to the touch?

Mobo Asus - K7v133-c
Ram - 512 meg pc-133 Atlas Precision
CPU - 1.6 ghz Athlon XP
Case - Smart Case Pro
Cooling -------
HSF - SwifTech 370 (the smaller 1)
2 case fans (1 in the front blowing in) (1 in rear blowing out)
System Exhaust Blower (under voodoo3)
PSU fan...
Thats it, yes the heatsink is warm to touch... sort-of like luke warm water....
Thats about it.. all fans are operable, the pc is 3 days old now..
=)
help please.. its a great system, and AMD is great.. but its really bothering me.. im about to buy a ALPHA NOVATECH PAL 8045
with a delta 68 CFM 4 pin connector.... what do you guys think.. what cooling fan do you suggest... any help on case moding..
I think my fans are suffiecent, except for my cpu, right now i got it clocked at 1 ghz to prevent heat conflicts.... until i get a new fan.. im also gonna hack the side of my case off.. mount a 120x120 Panasonic Liquid bvearing fan int he side with a duct over the CPU.... any other suggestion?? a fan in the top of the case??? i dunno.. more help, and thanx for the replies..
Bump please.
up
bump
Thanx,

When I am experimenting with airflow/ fan placement I make a cardboard case side and top (if its a removable piece) and cut holes in there first. Much easier to move things around that way!
I did better with an 80mm ducted to my hsf than a 120, but I was using a 4500 rpm fan on the sink.
A chimney fan on top of the case will help to get heat out better than just about anything.

How hot is the room you have your computer in? That case temp is way to high to get your chip much cooler no matter what HSF your using. I would look at getting some better case fans and more.

What he said. It's a lot easier to tweak things that way, and if you cut a hole in the wrong place it's no big loss, just keep cutting them until you hit the mark. Then line the cardboard to the real door and cut one in the actual metal.

il do that.. my room is about 69-73 degrees on average.. the computer tends to heat up the room to about 75 F
thats about it...

Try taping your ribbons and cables and get them outta the way to improve airflow in your computer.
Also, take a peek at the bottom of your heatsink to make sure it's in full contact with your CPU (you may notice that the imprint from the thermal grease isn't full).
Have fun with your new rig,

I don't mean to sound out of line or rude, or anything of the sort however.... first things first. This is my first post on this forum. I have viewed this forum and searched for answers regarding my problem. (very Similar to this thread) I don't overclock... no particular reason I just don't (yet....LOL) I understand everyone is trying to help in all of your posts in regarding the high temp how ever I don't recall seeing if this happened all of a suddenly or since the PC was built????
My situation was this.... I built my PC in June and is a
1.33Gig Athalon T-Bird 266 FSB on an
Asus A7A266 MB
512mg PC2100 ram
Enermax 300 Watt power supply
Nvidia 64mg Gforce2 ti,
Sound Blaster Live!
have been running WinMe....
Here's where the problem started ... 1 month or so after I built it I was alearted by the Asus probe that the CPU was at 65deg C. then locked up I rebooted and confirmed the temp in the Bios, before this my temp was continuously around 45deg C. the central air was on in the house and a vent is very near the PC approx 5ft. or so. So the July heat was not a factor. At this time I had 2 regular case fans in the tower from Radio Shack bottom front air comming in... top back fan going out. The Heatsink and fan was rated for 1.5 Gig and also AMD approved. Since this time the CPU temp was NEVER at the 45 deg C. again espicially after the modifications I have made. I added a Super Mini Orb, Artic Silver HS compound and a 4" 110v Monster fan from Radio Shack directly in front of the super Orb and with now a total of 7 fans plus one on my video card at an idle now the temp was at 54 deg C. My primary use for this PC is for running my Drag Racing simulator which a thousndth of a second in online racing could mean a win or a loss and is why I don't overclock but focus my attention on having my opperating system running as smooth and stable as possible instead. However this Sim really runs up the CPU temp. which worsens the matter. Since July the PC seemed to run OK but lately noticed apps oppened slower and slower, my reaction times in the Sim started to fall off from the norm in the past 3 weeks and thought my problem was some of the programs I had loaded into the PC and decided to format and run the Sim with nothing in it but the Sim alone... NFG same thing apps opening slow and BAD RT's... did another format same thing... figured it was me now so I thought OK I'll Load WinXP as a second system to run everything else and keep WinMe just for the Sim. XP said it couldn't load due to a corrupt C drive... hmmmm now the trouble shooting begins. Knowing the past and current delema with the CPU I still couldn't rule out the Hard drive I tried scandisking the HD but the PC kept locking up, I rebooted and checked the temp it was at 56 deg C. I formated the drive again did some FDISK changes Scandisk in DOS and reinstalled ME again. Then immediately looked for errors after the install. Errors all over the place. Yesterday I sent back the CPU under it's 1 year warrenty and I am hoping to have it's replacement by the weekend. I wish I would have gone by my instincts in July but instead listened to too many people telling me that this CPU normally runs hot and all the other stuff on how to just cool it better. I have this feeling now that I had a bad CPU from the beginning and really have yet to see the full potential of a 1.33mgh Thunderbird, hopfully I will this weekend!
By the way this is an awesome forum and there is loads to learn from in here.

He has a ASUS Motherboard.
Glaciator II's Will not fit properly onto the ASUS A7A266 Motherboards Go to there website, It says the details why not.
If i remember correctly There's a memory pin or something in the way.

Try H-Oda's cooling hack.
Use a 80-92 mm fan in the side of your case blowing onto the top of the cpu & sys. Untill you can get better cooling.
WOW ! 138* roastin weenies huh?
Lapping the HS is an easy one to try also.
Good Luck:cool:
i'm using a swiftech MCX462 on my xp1600, its not unlocked(yet) but i bumped the FSB to 155 (1627MHZ). it is extremly stable my temps run 41C at idle and 43 full load, ambiant is 24C. Vcore runs at 1.82. I've been extremly impressed with this heat sink. the fans a little loud but i've gotten use to it and dont notice it anymore. ready to unlock this puppy as it seems like it can do more.
sgamd
Thought I would mention that I have an almost identical setup, except for the mobo and Vcore of 1.9V
I have an unlocked 1600+ with the FSB at 155 but getting 1635MHz (??) and running 32C at 17C ambient. Don't run anything that loads it so it stays at 32C idle or working. My MC462 has a SanyoDenkie fan so isn't too loud.
Don't know why the higher Freq (10.5x155=1627) but what the heck.
Plan to OC soon and see what it will do. :D

after the new heatsink and stuff what is your temps at now? once my temp rose up there for no reason at all I never saw a temp in the 40's again. Actually my idle temp was 10 deg C higher from that point on until it finally spit up a fur ball at me last week. The CPU never totally gave up and didn't cause the PC to not boot but just started to totally go away and lock up when under load it took about 5 monthst to get to this point though. Accubyte is warrantying it fine though.
