I've mentioned these a while ago. They were supposed to be released a few months ago but Samsung is taking forever. Finally someone received one and did a benchmark, they look great but how much longer till Newegg starts selling them... that is the question.

seagate uses 250gb platters btw. Hopfully samsung will make a 320gb drive out of one of their 330gb platter, that would be a cool running quite fast drive, gosh i could have my cake and eat it too!

How can they make a 1TB model on a 330GB Platter with only 3 Platters?

i could see a a 500gb (2 platters 3 heads = 167 x 3 = 501gb)

but i dont see how they would come up with a 750gb drive out of a 334gb platter... that would be 2.25 platters or 4.5 heads... a 1500gb drive could work tho... 5 platters 9 heads 167gb per side x 9 = 1500gb

now what we might see is an ~835gb drive 3 platters 5 heads.

but i definetly could see a 320 640 and 1tb drive

Greetings!but i dont see how they would come up with a 750gb drive out of a 334gb platter...Could be a 1TB drive with some platter area not used at 100%. Or, two fully used 334GB platters and another platter at less than 100%.

The 750GB drive exists, check PDF:

Remember, a single platter has two sides, certain model utilizes only single side, like 3 platters but only 5 sides.

The one with single side probablly has a defect so they don't use it, sort of binning process in the CPU. :)

Not just that, but they can actually disable parts of the platter with their firmware. It is like cpus. They make them all the same, but some they give a lower multiplier and sell it at a reduced price. This has been used to come up with even drive sizes in the past. For this though, by the drive sizes, it looks like they are stepping it up by the half platter like you said, except for the 750GB drive.

oh ok i thought they had to use a full side of a platter cus all of the heads are hooked together meaning they will all sweap fully from the outisde to the inside.

Nice, does well in the only somewhat telltale bencmark, XP startup. Interesting how average some other hyped brand new model falls.
