View Full Version : External rad on floor (colder air) worth the extra hose length?

Do you think it would be worth placing an external rad on the floor where the air is colder vs on the desk beside the computer, or would the extra hose length required offset any benefits? I guess this would depend on specific ambient temperatures, but has anyone experimented with this before?

Thanks

First: :welcome: to the forums!! :D:D

Onto your question.

It depends on the temperature difference. If it is around 1-3...you won't see much decrease in temps, add the tubing to that...and you will see little improvement. Tag on the fact that it will be very hard to move/work on the computer, and you will be frustrated ;)

If you had your window open (in South Dakota, eh? :eh?:) your floor would be...very cold. In that environment, it would be beneficial to do that.

rent a drill with a 10" in diameter x 12' in length drill bit and drill a 12 foot hole in the ground, drop the rad in there and you will get nice temps :):)

but seriously are you taking about just putting it any old place on the floor or putting it over a air condition register?

if your just talking about placing it on the floor, move the pc to the floor and see what happens, if there is a significant improvement then maybe look into moving it, otherwise leave it the way it is.

I've got my heatercore sitting on the floor now. At first it was mounted to the back of my case, but the heat coming from the OCZ 520W powerstream psu and the rear 120 exhaust fan wasn't good for tems needless to say. Saw a nice drop by moving it away from the tower.

It would be quite annoying if I moved my PC around, but I don't really do that. When I do work on it, usually I just plop down on the floor next to the case instead moving it to another workspace. I've also got 2'-3' of tubing between the case and the heatercore which makes it easier to shift things around. With a Laing D5 I don't think the extra tubing length is hurting me too much.
