I currently have a MSI 8800GTS 640mb card in my main rig and a 8600GTS in my secondary setup, I want to replace the 8600GTS with a 8800 series card.
How does the 8800GT 512mb compare to the 8800GTS 640mb ?
The GTS 640mb still sells for over $325, I am assuming the 512mb GT would be cheaper...

A GT will be considerably faster than the current 8800 GTS 640. They are also cheaper if you can find one. It should be an easy pick for the 8800 GT. If you can hold off a couple of weeks a G92 based 8800 GTS is coming out.

In my tests, a GTS640 running at 700/945 was comparable to a 8800GT running 738/1050 running at 1920x1080 @ 16x ansio and 16x FSAA. This was for Doom3, Quake4, Trainz2006, and rFactor. For Crysis, they were also about the same, except the max playable FSAA was 4x (and 2x was quite a bit better). Other types of games will be different and at lower res, I believe the 8800GT will be faster.
The key difference is the cost. The GTS640 was going to cost me $315 after the rebate. I got the 8800GT for $219. I kept the cheaper card.
For those who own a GTS640, I don't think the 8800GT is a worthwhile upgrade unless you are worried about the resale value of the GTS, or power. At similar conditions I measured 40W less power with the 8800GT than the 8800GTS.

hah so violent!
It would be interesting to see the results from a 8800GT vs the new card coming out in Dec 3rd.

As would a lot of us. It should beat the GTX and hopefully the Ultra.
I sure hope that G92-based 8800GTS is coming out soon. I can step up from my current 8800GTS 640MB, but I've only got until 12/07/07.

nVidia would be raking it in if they could only produce enough of the damn things, I'm fedup of Wii syndrome, seeing nothing but crappy 320MB GTS cards in stock. Very frustrating when I've been waiting to upgrade for a while - preferably before Christmas.

^^I'm hoping a flash to the new G92 GTS BIOS will boost the SP's on the GT as well.
