Trying to cool this baby down. Just lapped the HS scrapped off the thermal pad, replaced with ASII. Dropped 4c, not good enough. Now I have an AVC sunflower, which had excellent reviews. Yet as I sit and look at it. It looks no better than the stock HSF. Granted it has a copper core, but its round, and smaller than the square PIV cpu. This can't be good. Anyway how much can I expect my temps to drop, after intalling the sunflower? If its only going to be 4/5c then I'll skip installing the sunflower and go to water cooling. Anybody?

I would be surprised if a heatsink gave you an additional drop of 4 c unless the origional heatsink was exceptionally poor quality, With any kind of air cooling you can not go lower than room termprature so water cooling may be a better solution if heat is a major problem.

I'm just got this cooler last week and I don't think it's all that great. My 1.5 oc'd to 1.8 reached 60C at full load, and that was with the stock HSF. Now the full load reads 56C to 57C. I used Arctic Silver II. i'm not happy with it . 1) because it's loud and 2) for the reviews that say this thing rocks...........well I don't think it does. So I have also decided to go with water cooling. I just got my first part for the system too, the waterblock. It's the Z4. Can't wait to get it all together.

Right on 2intense, thats what I thought. This thing actually looks quite cheesy, I think I'll trade it off and save for water cooling, WOW big bucks.
Are you sure it is making proper contact?
What kind of temperature probe are you using?

I'm using the internal probe on the ABit TH7-II. I measured the CPU the same way with each HS. The AVC Sunflower lowered by 3 to 4C at full load.

it sounds to me that you may need to work on case ventilation, that sunf;lower cant do anything if the air is stagnant...when i modded my case to add 4 extra fans my load temp went from 53 to 38...not bad huh?
Pull the side off the case and through a box fan at it. Check the temps with that and you will know the max cooling ability with your setup. It only dropped my temps 2c and water was the only answer.

I tested with the side off both times. Bottom line________That HSF is over rated. Most people are getting about the same temps as I am with the P4. I guess it could be be, but I don't think so.

But hows the air flow in your case and stuff?
I mean how it can be that bad? I've seen people run their P4 at 44 Celius full load.
Ya gotta wonder about reviews. I try to believe the ones that say they bought it, not "just got it from such and such" and find there's a link to the such and such store on the front page. Sponsorships and freebies tend to slant some reviews. I try to read a few before I buy.
Give it a week (ASII takes a while to set) then go shopping again.
Better luck to ya...

ASII should take only 2 days to break-in to its full potential.
