and they have the segate 320gb hard drives for 50 bucks too. These deals along with the ram deals recently can make one fast computer on the cheap
The deal is indeed enticing. It has provided a dilemma to me as well.
My current mobo and CPU--Asus P5K E WiFi and E6550--are only one to two months old. I bought them at my local Fry's as well--Woodland Hills, CA.
So, let's say, I buy this Q6600 and the ECS board, keep the Q6600, and sell the ECS board along with my E6550, do you think I could get $198 back?
A lot of debating!
Thanks to everyone who has posted about these wonderful deals, though. LOL.
Every time I visit OC forum, this section is always the first place I visit.
Heck, in fact, I check this section at least three to four times a day! :D

They also have the e6750 and e6850 w/ abit boards for $200 and $300 respectively. Personally I'd rather get the e6750 combo as I don't even know what stepping that q6600 is and its a better board, but then again that q6600 is a very tempting deal.

I think it is out the door. It's a good deal.
Twice I have gone to Fry's and bought a Q6600 and ecs mobo deal. Twice I have returned them because it was the B1 stepping and I decided I wanted a good mobo to put and OEM copy of windows xp on.
I sure do want one of those segate 320gb hard drives for 50 bucks. That's Thrus. only? Of course.
Does anyone have the stepping code for the q6600? im going to try to jump on this deal, since 198$ is a killer price if its a G0. I wont even bother with the MB, but a G0 for 198$ is still 60$ cheaper then anywhere else, if i can get it.
N/M found it thanks.

The E6550 that I bought there is G0 stepping. See this:
http://i13.tinypic.com/8fljcz5.jpg
I bought it along with the mobo--Asus P5K E WiFi.
As I've reported elsewhere on this forum, Fry's has a tendency of selling customer returns without ALWAYS labeling them as such. In fact, the Asus P5K E WiFi that I bought is a customer return--all the plastic bags containing the accessories had been ripped open, and there was no driver CD for the mobo!
However, Fry's does often have very good deals. You just need to be careful with what you buy.
I shop a lot at Fry's.
Edit: on second look, I see "Revision: G0" but "Stepping: B" in CPU Z. So does this mean my E6550 is still B stepping? LOL. Someone in the know could correct me!

Let us know if you get a G0. I'll be very surprised. The G0 is SLACR. I believe the B1 is SL9UM.
Even for a B1, that's a good deal though.
I've had good luck with the ECS mobos I've gotten in package deals from Fry's.
But, I wanted a G0 and since I was doing an OEM Win XP install, I wanted a better mobo.

It looks like a boxed chip in the ad too, in my experience with Fry's when they show a boxed cpu in the ad you usually get a boxed processor. Fantastic deal.

I am pretty sure it is a boxed/retail CPU. I've bought mobo CPU combos from Fry's. As far as fantastic deal is concerned, that will depend on whether you are on the market for a CPU or a CPU/mobo combo. Take me as an example, I just bought my CPU/mobo from Fry's about a month and a half ago, so it is really hard for me to shell out another 200 just to have a quadcore!
At this moment, there are still not that many apps or games that FULLY utilize quadcores. So I am going to pass on this deal and wait till the Black Friday of 2008 to shop for a quadcore.
I love this section of OC forum, I have to say.

Woz, I respectfully disagree. It's a terrific deal, even if you don't take advantage of it. The same products anywhere else will cost you significantly more. You can't even buy the processor alone for that price anywhere else.

Just so people know the maxtor (seagate perps) 320gb drives are available at frys.com
I have 3 and going to get a 4th for matrix raid, by themselves they do about 65mb/s avg over the whole disk, 3 in a 74gb matrix raid 0 avg 215mb/s and 9 ms, 4 should be close to 285mb/s and under 8.5ms I hope :)

ya dont let them give you a tray cpu... be like well you guys show a retail cpu, THEN also dont accept anything other than a G0 stepping. SLACR is it, and is easily readable for the prod code on the retail box (Last 5 symbols) and or the cpu.
its a great deal ima be going to frys tommorrow but i dont need a quad right now.
Just got back from frys in Tempe, AZ. the retail intel box i recieved, shows SLACR code on the box, so it should be G0 Stepping on the cpu.The ECS motherboard is a matx board, which ill probably either try to sell or just toss in a closet.

Crap, I just got back from Frys and mine is a B1 stepping. Place was to busy to get picky about steppings, not to mention somebody somewhere dropped the ball and it took the guy 15 minutes just to figure out what was going on.
You think they would allow an exchange?
Oh yeah, the board that comes with it is crap...and I don't even think it is quad compatible. 2+ hours in the checkout line here...

35th Ave and T-Bird has nothing in stock on this deal.
They told me to go to Baseline Road in Tempe they have 40 in stock on the CPU's however they are low on the mobo's. They will offer you another mobo. If not someone ditched the same mobo next to the potato chips on your way to the checkout. I waited 3 hours in the CHECKOUT line!
Also bought a 500GB Seagate IDE drive for my my server for 150$ with 5 year warranty... not bad.

haha i showed up to the frys in oxnard at like 1045... i wasnt going to buy the q6600 but the checkoutline literally wrapped around the whole store... it was a good 2 hrs long no way i was waiting in that line.
if you look on the IHS of the cpu there will be the SSPEC code, a 5 character code. if its SLACR its a go
also on the retail box the SSPEC code is the last 5 characters of the prod code.

Yes! I have a G0!
Well, I finally caved in--changed my mind--and bought the Q6600 and the mobo combo.
And mine is a G0, too!!!!
http://i11.tinypic.com/82ln12q.jpg
Bought mine from the Fry's in Woodland Hills, CA.
Now I need to sell my C2D E6550, which is only about a month and a half old, along with the mobo which came with the Q6600.
Also, something interesting happened to me. I previously had an E6550, so after I installed Q6600, this is what is shown in "Device Manager":
http://i13.tinypic.com/72rppnr.jpg
LOL! I tried to update the driver, but Vista(64 bit) says that I already have the latest driver for the proc?!
Not a big deal, but if you know how to fix this, would appreciate you dropping me a clue!
Happy holidays!:santa:
Uninstall the E6550 instances?
Uninstall the E6550 instances?
Exactly!:)
After I posted this, I thought this was easy! So I uninstalled the E6550, the system rebooted, and now I have this:
http://i14.tinypic.com/6okeec5.jpg
LOL! However, the CPU score in my Vista score is still 5.8, same as the E6550, which was OCed to 3.15(450x7). The Q6600 is OCed to 3.2(400x8) on a Tuniq Tower.

I know this may be too late but XP EULA, even OEM licenses, is more liberal than Vista licenses. You can tranfer the OS to another 'computer' (motherboard, HD, whatever) you just have to uninstall it from the previous one and only have it installed on one computer at a time.

I honestly would like to OC but I dont no the first thing to it. My current rig is fully stock. I'd like to overclock, but Im not much of a tweaker, more like a set it and forget it type of character. I have a lot on my plate to worry about temps, voltages, and all that. So I dont know what direction to take. I feel like using the ECS board because I dont see any benifit for me to purchase a OC board when I dont even OC?
My main concern is that I want a system for games, but something that is also stable for school. Can anyone help me LOL?!?! I hear the Asus P5K3 Deluxe is pretty user friendly for OCing? I feel like I should just use this ECS... but I dont want to put it in my 830 stacker case... how pathetic!

Dude, get an Abit IP35, IP35-e, or if you want more bling, IP35 Pro. These are by far the most user friendly overclocking boards I have ever dealt with. Settings out the yahoo, and perfectly stable. Only gripe is double boot issue...however, thats being fixed in the next bios.
My roomate has an IP35-E, and I have an IP35. He is an overclocking idiot, but still managed to get his 6400 (2mb cache) well over 3Ghz on a crappy cooler. Just a matter of setting front side bus, and perhaps a little cpu voltage. Funny thing is, he has crappy ram to boot :P

one way you know you're getting a crappy board is going to the ecs website and the specs on the board are down due to a website error:

lol@ nedclocker.im not bragging about it. i thought it was funny just because of the fact that everyone *including yourself* freaked out about it. if he had asked me to go to the end of the line i gladly would have so dont jump to conclusions please. i just got lucky is all. its not like it helped very much because i would have spent just as much time in the stupid checkout line. sounds like you got a bit of a chip on your shoulder for some reason. maybe you were one of the guys who finished thanksgiving dinner and went to camp out for 18 hours :P
I picked up this deal. the fry's in Austin opened up 45 minutes late due to "computer issues" yea, right!!!!
1100 people walked in the first 5 minutes. When I showed up at 4:15 am there was already a huge line with the front door barricaded to wrap around the side of the building. SO myself and about 20 others watched the line go in and then went in after they moved the barricade. Some chick that worked there was keeping count and I looked at the time when they moved in. By the time I got in, people were already coming out with purchases....thats how fast they were moving. i walked over to the computer center, gave them my name, they printed out my sheet, gave me the ecs mobo and I went to the register. i was 3 people back and went and checked out. I told the cashier to check to make sure it was the GO stepping b/c that's all I wanted. He looked and got me one.

What does the retail Vista EULA allow?
RETAIL Vista allows moving at as many times as you want, of course it's only to be installed on one system at a time. OEM Vista EULA technically only allows it to be installed on one system ever, I believe it's tied to the motherboard, but as of now or at least last I knew they are allowing activations on different hardware as long as it's only one computer at a time.
