I've noticed on that on my PIV, the lettering is raised on the chip can I or should I try lapping this off? It seems to me it would interfere with proper thermal transferance.

It is possible but very dangerous, If you want to do it just get some very fine 2000 grit wet/dry sandpaper and use a very little bit of water and sand it a couply of time then look at it and sand again.. do it till most or all the lettering is off. but From own try and error its very dangerous and you only get a 2 degree drop most but is also makes the cpu a little more fragle.. So have fun and becareful.

Dont listen to him. On Pentium 4's (and tualitin celerons) there is an IHS over the core, basically, thatis a millimeter thick peice of tin covering the CPU. This protects it. You can lap it all you want, If you want, you can remove the IHS, but if you rush, you could damage the core. Basically, Thermal Transfer is already hurt by the goop and the ammount of goop intel puts between the IHS and core. Its very spotty, and a bad goop to.

Also, lapping a P4 (while its IHS is on) is NOT dangerous. Just dont lap anything other than the tin plate.

UMM ok Yea It is possible but very dangerous, ...LIKE I said Before
It is possible but very dangerous, Don't get made just cuz your don't have the guts to lap it most people will try anything to drop a few degrees... So please Listen to who ever you want just uses your own judgment..

And people who don't know much shouldn't say anything... People who Do know sometimes say it wrong but in the end they are right from there own experience..

No. It is COMPLETELY safe to lap a P4. They have a tin plate over the CPU. the CPU core isnt even exposed. You cant overlap. its not dangerous in any way as you arent lapping the core. And yes, I removed the IHS and lapped it. And i got a 10 degree drop. Remember, the IHS just blocks thermal transfer. So dont talk about lapping cores unless you actually know anything about the CPU he is talking about.

Its completely safe to lap a P4, as long as the IHS is on. If you remove the IHS (like i did) what you said comes it to play. Most people do not remove the IHS, however, so it is safe. FYI; I lapped it, and like i said, dont try to help someone unless you know about the chipset he is referring to. Obviously you have an Athlon.

Yes i know but i thought that he already took it off.. not to be a rude but i also run more then a althon i have 2 tbirds 1 xp1600+ @ 2000+ and i have 3 intel chips 2 are p2 and 1 is p4 so i did know what i was talking about i just skiped adhead...

OK heres my word of advice:

Don't take the IHS off and don't lap it.

You don't achieve much by lapping it you shave off 0.5 degrees and you take a risk of killing your core no matter what they say there's a risk of killing your core.

If you do lap it be very careful and have your chip in an anti static bag and leave a lil square open for the IHS or the core to stick out.

Then take 2000 grit and then water wet it and then wet the core carefully.

Keep in mind this is a dangerous procedure and I've posted a thread whether to lap and 95% of the people who lapped it have murdered their comp after like their 2nd boot even though they saw a 0.5 degree difference.

The best thing for you to do is basically to lap the heatsink.

"but From own try and error its very dangerous and you only get a 2 degree drop most but is also makes the cpu a little more fragle.." I belive i said that it make it very fragle also don't make a big difference in cooling as for the risk in sanding it i agree with tsunami... And i was not trying to start anything just saying...
