View Full Version : Help overclocking my system.
I am a complete newbie when it comes to overclocking. This will be my very first attempt. I have read so much info and even tried to overclock and i just cant get it. I have changed the voltages for my CPU, Memory and so forth.
First this is my system:
Motherboard: Abit in9 32x-MAX
CPU: Intel C2D E6550 2.3 @1333FSB
Memory: 4G of OCZ (4 x 1 quad kit)
HDD: 160G Maxtor
Vidoe Cards: 2 8800GT's in SLI
With that out of the way. I changed things in the BIOS and even in uGuru. It shows my Ext clock is at 462 Mhz with CPU volt at 1.44. I saw someone mention CPU-Z so i found that and it says my bus speed is 350 and my clock speed moves from 2100 to 2400 about. How exactly do i do this and does this uGuru really work like it should? Please any advice would be helpful. I have read thru many articles and websites and im still a little confused. If someone could tell me where to go and what to put in can do it. The articles seem a little confusing. Im a plain and simple kind of guy.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Welcome to the Forum!:welcome: http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=491697
Let me look up the bios of your mb and I'll get back to you.. I don't have that mb but I'll give a hand.. BRB.

Ok, what bios does the mb have? Ver. 12 is the one to use, according to this article. http://www.hexus.net/content/item.php?item=9401&page=5
"support for C1E and EIST" is important. This is why the cpu-z is fluctuating. In the "cpu feature" section, http://img.hexus.net/v2/motherboards/intel/abit/in932xmax/bios2-big.jpg , I would "disable" everything except maybe "execute disable bit".
Update: they have ver.13 now.. http://www.uabit.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=32&Itemid=48&page=3&model=333

What are your memory timings? http://img.hexus.net/v2/motherboards/intel/abit/in932xmax/bios3-big.jpg
What model of ocz'z?
If I were you, I'd start out with just 2xgigs, just to simplify at first. Sometimes 1 bad stick of ram will throw everything off and is a little easier to find out the max potential of the cpu/ram/mb.

I have Bios Version 13. When i got the board i couldnt even get into the BIOS so i used the Flashemnu and updated it and it says 13. My memory timings are 4-5-4-15 the model number i am guessing is OCZ2P8004GQ Its a quad kit. It says the cas latency is 4 Its PC2 6400 800. I will disable what you said and see what that does. How come i can go any higher than 350 on my Ext clock without it sayin overclock has failed in my uGuru?
Thanks again

Sorry Dop3y, it's getting late and I have to drive in the morning.. If you've bumped up the fsb and getting your bench's to crash, bump up the vdimm, nb, and vcore.. The nb will need it cuz of the 4 sticks of ram. It might get warm though. It might need xtra cooling.
Make sure your cpu multiplier is not on "auto".
Good luck.. I'll check in in the morning.

The first link i have the same except i have sli ready disabled, not detected
CPU speed 2334(333)
FSB Auto 1333.3
est new clock is 2333mhz
NB x16 clock is 100
spp clock is 200
The second link i have user define
cpu 1.35
DDR2 Volt 1.85
0%
0%
CPU VTT 1.20
NB 1.35
SB 1.50
HT Volt is 1.20
I hope this gives you what you were askin
I have had no luck with this at all. I get an error message when i try to boot my computer. It say warning computer is in safe mode please go to and resety settings or something to that sort. How do i get it not to work in safe mode?

Are these the sticks you have? http://www.ocztechnology.com/products/memory/ocz_ddr2_pc2_6400_platinum_quad_kit
Notice that the voltage is 2.1
Do you have yours at 1.85?
Did you try running with just the 2 sticks first?
The safe mode is probably caused by a corrupted os caused by a bad oc..
Anyway, run your ram at 2.1 to start out with.
What do you have for your "cpu operating speed", "fsb memory ratio" and "nb strap cpu as"?

Yeah those are the exact ones. I changed my volts to 2.1 for those and it worked fine no warning in the post screen. I tried two sticks and i still got the warning in the post screen so i reset everything until i found something else out on what to do.
CPU Speed: Linked
FSB Memory Ratio: Auto
NB Strap CPU as: PSB1333
Sorry it took so long to get back busy with Thanksgiving with the fam and all.

What brand/model of powersupply(psu) do you have?
When you tried 2 sticks, did you use the same colored slots? Was the ram voltage 2.1?
If so, run memtest http://www.memtest.org/#downiso. I use the floppy disk one.

I have a TT Toughpower 750W Model# W0116. I tried it with just 2 sticks and i still get overclocking falied everytime i go over 350 Mhz. When i restart i get an error stating "Warning! System is now in safe mode please reset in the post screen. I did the memtest with all 4 sticks and it said pass 1 error 0. it lasted about 45 minutes or so. Is that normal?
Is it better to run 2G or 4G of memory with SLI?

What are you using for the cpu heatsink/fan?
What is your vcore temp at 1.35?
In memtest, just run test "5". Let it loop a few times.
It might have taken 45 min. because of the 4 gigs in.
How high did you take the vcore before?
Did you disable the options in the cpu area?
I don't know about the gig/sli? Maybe post the question in "nvidia"..

I am using my stock heatsink/fan.
The vcore flustuates between 1.34 and 1.40.
I took the vcore up to about 1.85 and i was able to boot up and everything except i got a the warning in the post screen that the system was in safe mode. It also started to make a hissing sound so i instantly turned it down and restarted my comp.
They are disable and i still get the error in the post screen.
This is very confusing and frustrating cause it said that this board was supposed to be very easy to overclock with uGuru but it has been nothing but a hassle.
Do you think something might be wrong with the board itself or could it be something in the BIOS. I dont have any kind of problems except when i try and oc my system.

"1.85"?? Vcore(cpu) or vdimm(ram)???
Vcore, that's way too high. Vdimm too low.
Did you read the "stickies" in this board?
That flucuation isn't good either. You might want to get a digital multimeter and take one of the 4 pin molex plugs and test the 12 volt line while idle then load..
Could be that you got a stinker of a mb or cpu or psu.. It happens..
Yeah i saw and read somewhere and saw photos of someone getting the Vcore up to 1.58. That is what i meant not 1.85 lol sorry. Yeah i am gonna take the motherboard back and get one of the same kind as soon as they get some in. If i still have the same problem then im gonna get a new processor. Im thinkin of the Q6600. What do you think of that processor? Good one?
I also got some new memory today. Its crucial Ballistic.

Is that good memory?

Yes, that's good stuff.
From what I've been reading, that mb really isn't the best, on a couple of other forums.. You might want to check into a different mb all together especially if you are looking into getting a q6600.
Just "google" the model of the mb and check out the results on the other forums. They seem to be getting high fsb's but with having to lower the multiplier.
I can only change my multiplier to either 6 or 7. thats it nothing else. Is that normal?

Yep..
After hours and days of trying to figure out why i was getting the error i finally found a post from someone in another forum that said using BIOS v1.2 is the best for overclocking. Well i updated my BIOS from 1.3 to 1.2 or whatever and it is working fine now. So now that i got that out of the way i am ready to start learning how to overclock. I have my memory setting at 1:1. Is that good? I have my volt for dimm's at 2.2 and my vcore is 1.35. I started to slowly move up my clock speed but i dont know how far i should go before i know its too late. So if you can let me know what to do from here i will try it.
Thanks in advance for all your help.
I have been slowly messing with things and i get three different reading for clock speed from three different programs. In CPU-Z i get a clock speed of 2.1, in Ntune i get a clock speed of 2.4 and in the BIOS and uGuru i get a clock speed of 3.2. I have only been changing things in the BIOS. Should i do a reinstall of windows since i change the version of my BIOS? Why would i be getting three different readings? which one is correct?

In cpu-z, what is your bus speed, multiplier, and in the memory selection, fsb:dram?
Well what I do is run the cpu section of either 3dmark 2003 or 05 to test for intial stability at every increase in fsb. If it crashes, I increase a voltage or loosen a timing. Don't go too high on the voltages with stock cooling. Watch your temps.

In CPU-Z my bus speed is 377.5 MHZ, Mult. is 6, and the fsb:ram is 11:12. It says my Dram frequency is 411.8 Mhz. My timings are 4-4-4-12.
Everytime i go up to like 2.68 or higher my computer freezes and the XP load screen. Is that normal? how do i get it to go higher and not freeze.
My CPU temp is only 32 degress. Voltage is 1.34 and drops to like 1.19 or 1.17 sometimes. dunno why it does that. My voltage on my memory is 2.10.

The voltage drop isn't good. That's your main problem. Don't know if your mb or the psu making it drop..
Do have a "c1e" option in the cpu section in bios? If so, disable it.
What is your nb strap,in the guru, set at? Set it at "by cpu". Should make the fsb:ram 1:1
.
Did you post any questions on the mb/bios in the Intel>775 board? Someone has got to have experience with this board. From what I've read it's not the best for oc'n. Especially with 4gig.
