i thought 650gb was a typo... i wonder what that's about... four 160gb platters rounded up? no... that doesn't sound right... perhaps it's a 750gb with 100gb unavailable to increase avg speed rating? who knows.

Honestly, a Seagate 500GB@$110 is not a great deal. The price on those drives has hovered around that mark for several months now. It would be something if it was $90 w/ free shipping...which I have seen that deal a year ago on WD and some Seagates (but they were short lived). I think the advertising you're seeing for $110 is to make you think that you are getting a great deal. Just a trick ploy.
I paid 250 for a 1TB 32meg cache I figure the extra $30 was worth 1 drive vs two.

Yeah, but this is the new Seagate drive. (7200.11) They were just introduced not to long ago so I doubt you will be finding better deals on it.

Isn't this drive essentially the fastest 7200rpm drive out there?
I'll be picking up a couple of these beauties once the fan fare dies down. I was a nub when I bought my hard drive and I'm pretty sure that, other than capacity, it sucks.

These are the 32MB drives that do 100MB/s and up  . The ones Rocket Child refers to were the 7200.10 with 16MB and closer to 75MB/s speeds... And the 7200.10 320GB's were more like $80 (the 500GB 7200.10's were more like $100 IIRC)...
I'm STILL holding out for 3x 750 7200.11's. I almost broke down and did 4x 500's when NewEgg had them for $109/ea free shipping, but then I know I'll fill those up quick, and my RAID-5 card only has 4 ports. I'm hoping 3x 750's will allow me some expansion (add a 4th 750 later)...
Anyone know when the 7200.11 750's are due out? I figured we would have seen them by now? My RAID-5 array has been full for like 4 months now as I wait...
And what is up with that 650GB PATA? That is odd... Maybe a 1TB with a bunch of defects mapped-out or something?
100mb/s and up? I thought they were still 'only' around 85-90mb/s?

That's probably what I'm expecting out of them, but Seagate published a 105MB/s STR for them IIRC...

Not the 105mb they said but still very, very nice for a 500GB HDD. If I had the money, I'd replace my current storage drives with these.

I couldn't wait for Neweg to get the 7200.11 750's. I saw that a place called "Micro Dimensions" had like 30,000 of the 750's in stock  , so I pulled the trigger.
3x 750GB 7200.11's for $216/ea. They arrived on Monday. I re-built my RAID-5 array last night (on a true Areca 1210 XoR Raid card), but I haven't had a chance to bench the array yet. I was slightly worried that my RAID card might not play well with the 32MB buffers, but it seems fine and dandy.
Once I finish copying my data back over, I'll try to knock out a few benches. I still have an open port too - so I'll be adding a 4th 750GB in a few months. Yeah :D It will be interesting to see if 3x 7200.11 750GB's will surpass my old array with 4x 7200.10 320GB's on the same controller...
