I have 3 comps, 2 desktops and 1 laptop.
I was wondering what would be the easiest way to network them all onto my cable connect and trying to stay in a reasonable price rang.
I have a ton of rj45 and they already all have nic cards.
I was thinking a router...
Would be great to know what u guys think,
thx

Definately a router. A lot of people say good things about Linksys. I have a D-Link that has worked flawlessly as well. I paid only $30 after rebate and a sweet sale at Best Buy.
Gateway router!
I have a Linksys; Netgear, D-Link and others also make them.
I definitely think it's the way to go: I have used proxy servers too, but that uses up resources that could be crunching for Seti@home!
They also give you a basic firewall, and better local network performance than a hub. I also suggest ZoneAlarm for additional protection from script kiddies and self-propagating virii: ZoneAlarm kept about 1500 hits a day out of my pc during Code Red- I never got infected.:)

Well depending on what u plan to be doing on that network. If all you want to do is share files within the network, a switch or hub would work just fine. However, if u wanna have all comps connected to the net and each have pretty good bandwidth needs then a router would be the way to go. :D

I concur I got a linksys router and highly recommend it. Its about $80 at best buy regularly and they probably will have some router on sale after x-mas. if you get the linksys pm me and I would be happy to help you configure it.
you could just run a server and put two extra nics in the server that would work! I think it would be cheaper and you would have better storage and security. price will be more if you don't have 2k server though.
