i have a malay p3 1GHz CPU, which is overclockable to 150 FSB with stock fan and heatsink with no problem. I recently bought another p3 1GHz CPU made Costa Rica.

My question is:
which chip is more overclockable? Any idea?

p/s: both the CPU are retails.

Which place make sthe better oc'ing cpu's?

Really, I think it is more a matter of luck, all factors/stepping codes...etc. being the same. I've heard it argued both ways. For example my brother and I both got P4 1.7 ghz a couple weeks ago. We got them from the same dealer, and they were both stepped the same. Only real difference was he used stock cooling and I didn't. His came from Costa Rica, mine came from Maylasia. His oc'ed to about 1.95 ghz. Mine oc'ed to about 2.159 ghz. Looking at the oc'ing data base, here, I find about as much of one as the other.

Just grab a straw with the latest stepping.

Cheers,
Mike Lamb

Generally the Malay CPU's have always overclocked better than the Costa Rica CPU's....Why don't you look at the CPU database?

Malaysia has long been Intels better Fab. Costa Rica was known more for OEM product. Some feel that OEM is low grade, but Intels process is outstanding and they all produce good chips. Some are better than others however. A good example of this is the Celeron 1.2 Tulatins in the cpu database. Phillipine product seems to require less voltage to achieve a given OC. You may also notice that there are more Malay Celeys in the database. This could be cause by the sheer volume of Malay CIII 1.2s compared to Philli... cpus on the market??

All the Oem chips went to... like..... OEM's:D I bet there were many of them too! They got 1.2GHz celery systems at Best Buy. I would imagine the OEM chips in all of them will equate to a much higher amount than all of the retail chips out and about that Joe O'Clocker buys!

I'm thinking to give either one of the 1GHz CPU to my gf. So, which one should I give and which one should I save for myself?

Any comment?

Well try both overclock but its most likely the Malay chip will overclock better so you should give her the Costa Rica chip because I'm guessing shes not such a hardcore computer overclocker that wants everything out of the chip or does she? Hehe

Let me put it this way... at a very high 1.82V to achieve my overclock, I'd trade my Malaysian for a Phillipine chip to test out this theory any day :p ...

Not to mention the occassional reboot if the temps approach 42C :D

Ouch man, 42 deg. C:( These chips are touchy at these vcores huh. Maybe a egay sale could suffice and pick up one of thes 1GHz .13u celeries. You think these are slow in quake at ~125fsb try them at 160+fsb with mem that can handle it. I know my micron ram can albeit cas332/166MHz.

.................................................. ..........

You ain't BS'n after owning three of these chips I should know a little by now eh'! People can take good advice or others advice right:D Since I have been here it has been the philli chip that kicked arse always ever since OC.com had that article where the H2O cooled philli celery hit 1.67GHz on near ambient H2O and what 1.55v. Nah , philli chip all the way in .13u anyways! Seems the .18u malay cDO 1000e's though are the way to go for OC'n goodness if you are so inclined..

:D

Tempting as that is, I can always stick it back at 1200 and really not even notice  ... I'm also thinking of some more burnin while my cable service is down this week...

tsunami:

So, you think I should give her the Costa Rica chip together with my old BH6-II mobo and save myself the Malay chip with ST6R ya?

p/s: my gf knows nothing about OC at all.

One more question. are the 1GHz chips that i mentioned .18u or .13u?

The PIII 1Ghz chips are .18u chips. I know the newer ones come with the heat spreader and technically say "FCPGA2 Form Factor", but I have one of these chips from Costa Rica myself and it works in my SA6-R.

P.S. If this were my gf I'd gave her the malay chip but only because she overclocks. Then again, she's die-hard AMD so I guess it wouldn't matter much, now would it?? Of course, Mr. Intel over here had to show her how to unlock her Athlon... but I digress. If she knows nothing about OCing then give her the Costa Rica chip, chances are for what she'd be using it for, she'd never know the difference.

I was surprised when i OC my Costa Rica chip on ST6R with stock HSF to 1249MHz (165FSB). I successfully loaded Counter Strike with no problem. But, I can't read the CPU temperature on MBM 5.08 for unknown reason. I stopped trying it for tonight, but I'll carry on increasing the FSB until the max.

As I mentioned before, I tried my Malay chip on VH6-II with stock HSF to stable at 150MHz with no prolem and the max at 159FSB unstable, but never touch 160.

I will try the Malay chip later and see either if the Costa Rica chip is overclockable than the Malay chip or it's the contribution of the ST6R.

Cheers...

I was trying 166FSB just now. It was successfully loaded into Win2000. But, when I was trying it with Counter Strike, it crashed at the middle of the game. So, I think the heat is the main problem. I have a Thermaltake Volcano 5 HSF. I'm not sure if it's enough for the high FSB or not. Or, any other suggestion?

p/s: there is a capacitor very close to the socket and I'm affraid big heat sink will tear it down. Even my P3 1GHz big stock fan just fit on that socket.

can anyone recommend a good HSF for me? I remember someone mentioned Thermal Right SK6. Or, should I get Swiftech?

In this order:

Swiftech MCX 462
Alpha PAL 8045
Millennium Glaciator II
ThermalRight SK6

They are all copper.
They have medium to highly sounded delta fans.

Just be caution if you order either of the first two since they are enourmous and you have to check if they fit your board.

But I would recommend the Glaciator II or the SK6.

The first two are expensive too...
