I flip my mouse pad. The fabric underneath most pads are great for me.

when I had "balls" I used a piece of foam mat from a hobby shop. It was 12 x 24, so I never took a chance of losing the pad in UT.
When I went gelded I chose the desktop as my pad....and trust me..there is NO worse surface than mine, but the ball-less mouse works fine.
I've never used a mouse pad. It didn't work well that way at first, but eventually the finish wore off the desk and now it works great. :) Of course the cordelss optical works even better in that spot.

I use a "Everglide", very sweet pad and it should last a lifetime. A optical mouse still works better with a good textured surface imo.
HERE (http://www.everglide.com) is the Everglide website.
I bought a fancy $20 mousepad spcially designed for optical mice from Best Buy (comes with a gel wrist support)... it's 'specially woven' for laser-tracking, and I must admit it looks good and does an equally good job...
go here (http://www.bestbuy.com/detail.asp?e=11075209&m=488&cat=582&scat=584) to check it out.
welp i use a belkin mousepad with my optical, and the optical works wonderfully on it! check it out here (http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Merchant_Id=&Section_Id=1745&pcount=&Product_Id=22460&Section.Section_Path=%2FRoot%2FComputerAccessories %2FMousePadsWristRests%2FWaveRest%2F)

I'm using the Ratzpad with my Logitech Dual optical. I had to sandpaper the surface a bit to reduce the reflectivity level a bit. My mouse was having a hard time accurately tracking with such a shiny surface. It's good now though:)
Pinky: That looks like an awsome mouse pad but I have no credit card and I'm afraid when gaming my mouse will slip off that.
As for me I use to use a mouse pad and now I don't. I noticed such a difference. Everything was backwards. More accurate no mouse slipping off the mouse pad.
I prefer the desk since it works better at least for me.

That's the best choice. Use what works "best" for you. :)

You got lucky, I bought a 3M "precise mousing pad". Optical freaked on the surface because of the texture. I'd be scanning the grooves in the pad, and the cursor would like like some one was shaking my desk. Really hard to snipe in CS when it's doing that. Geuss the pad was made for regular mice.

Yep, Everglide puts a side note on some of their pads because not all of them work well with a optical mouse. I made sure I bought one that causes no problems.

When I had a black Dell mousepad that happened to be too since black was a bad color to use the optical red light since it has no refllection to the lights.
I actually thought it was the mouse and was going to buy a new one.

You havn't seen one in real life. They're HUGE, about 10" accross. I saw it at Best buy the other day, and I came about 20 feet from the register before I thought "Twenty dollars? For a MOUSE PAD? I'll use my old one, thank you very much."
I changed my mind, I'm going to go buy one sometime after Christmas. =)

I just got one of these http://www.americancovers.com/Retail/optical.html
today at best buy and so far its great. A little on the small side compared to a ratpad but I like the smooth feel of it. I was having problems with small mouse movements before I got it.

I went to IKEA and bought a set of Gel mouse pad and keyboard thingy, the mouse pad has some fancy smancy wrist thing. i had the first set for over a year until i left a capless Sharpie leaning next to the mouse pad. So i bought another set 3 weeks ago. Cost per set=$6.00
Ill never buy another kind again.
That and my wrist pad feals like a boob :)
wow you dug up an old thread, but since I just bought an everglide giganta, i have to say that rocks

Desk top...No other place was better designed for optical mouses then a desktop.

i hate using just a desktop.
i just use a rubber/cloth $1 pad from walmart
i've looked at everglide or ratpadz, but could never justify buying a mouse pad for that much.
are they really worth it?
