Ok, the story goes like this. I desided to upgrade to Vista64 and went out and bought a ASUS M2N32-SLi Deluxe MoBo/ AMD 4800 X2 CPU and 2 Gig of generic RAM Bundle that was compatable with it as my previous MoBo was a ASUS A8N32-SLi Deluxe and was told it would not run Vista. The buit in drivers(Vista64) will run STALKER no problem but with HL2 EP2 I get a lot of artifacts, plus when I run steam I get a pop up telling me my drivers are out of date and could cause problems, when I folow the link I get this message
''Steam has determined that your video drivers are out of date, however we have not been able to determine which drivers you need.''
I haver tried the latest three Vista 64 drivers and every time I install them and run a game (any game) the PC crashes and I get a screwy green screen but also the sound of the game. I have to shut down the PC, restart, remove the installed driver, restart then let Vista install it's own driver before I can play anything again (with bad artifacts).
Any help would be much appreciated!:bang head

Any Mobo should run VISTA. Who told you your old MoBo wouldn't run VISTA?
Go to nVidia site to get video drivers. VISTA's built-in drivers are not made for gaming.

The "Certified for Vista" crap is just that, crap. It means nothing. They even "Certify" monitors, keyboards and even mice...

It was actually ASUS themself's who said the MoBo would not run Vista. Anyway, I have the new set up so I'm gonna keep what I've got now.
I have gone to the nvidia's own website for the correct driver's and also tried some off of guru3d.com. they all fail. When I try and install the 163.75 halfway through installing it tells me I have a 32bit uninstaller and that I cant continue the instalation then the next pop up tells me I dont have a 64 edition of Vista (I do) and I cant continue the instalation. I'm pulling my hair out! The latest certified driver and the latest bete driver dont work either.

Tried that too, as I had a look through here before I posted to see if could find an already answered question on it. Would a reinstall solve my problems????

If it does it in XP too, some XFX cards had bad memory.

I have the same problem in Vista with my eVGA 7900GT KO, card runs fantastic under XP Pro though, it's just a bug with Vista that's why I am back on XP until they fix their ****.

Well I have reinstalled Vista again, downloaded all the updates and installed the latest driver. It crashed the PC as soon as I ran a game. Same thing as before, green screwy screen but can hear the game running in the background, I can fire my gun ect but cant get outta the game via task manager or escape or anything. I have to restart the PC. With the driver Nvidia's website says to use 163.xx the game will run great but when i come out of it the PC will crash the same way again.
On a plus point I dont have the same 32/64bit issues poping up while I try and install a new driver. I think that may have been caused by the old XP 32 bit files being stored on the HD by Vista and my copy of Vista is 64 bit??? This time around I wiped the whole HD before I installed Vista.
The one thing I notice when i install the Nvidia drivers is the progress bar only gets about 3/4 the way through and the screen goes black, there's a couple of 'bing bong' noises and the screen comes back and askes me to restart. Is this normal?
Cheers guys!!

Help.Well, if you did a google search (hint hint) for your problem and didn't find any results, you need to open a ticket with Valve (steampowered.com). They should be able to help you.
I have a feeling it is the combination of Vista and 64 bit ;)
EDIT: Why are you running 64bit anyway? You can't even use the extra memory addresses

Thanks thideras,
I'm such a thicko sometimes!! I googled my problem and after a few hours got my problem sused! Turns out the 7900gt's have a problem with Vista and installing driver 158.24 solved it!
On your other point, I bought Vista 64 because I thought it would be better in the long run. i thought that having a 64 bit PCU ment that running a 64 bit OS would be better, but I am a noob. Can you explain why I should not be ruinning Vista 64,please?

It's a hog, Especially with 1GB, And it's got bad driver support.

Can you explain why I should not be ruinning Vista 64,please?64bit has less driver support. Less people use 64bit (for now), so companies feel there is more of a need to support 32bit and consequentially 64bit gets less support ;)
There have been some quirky issues with 64bit (xp and vista) and drivers.

the two main points of a 64 bit OS are
1 - to utilize more than 3+ gigs of ram
2 - to run 64 bit programs.
you're probably not doing either. that doesn't mean you need to go buy a 32 bit version now. just know that you might have some extra headaches with driver support and you're not really gaining anything from the 64 bit OS. now that i think of it. you might be able to contact M$ and get a 32 bit version sent to you for a smallish fee.

Hey, thanks for clearing that up for me! I'm running 2 x 1 gig of ram just now but will be upgrading to 2 x 2gig of better ram as soon as I sell my old MoBo, RAm and CPU. I cant deside if its worth getting another 7900gt to run in SLi or wait 6 months for a 8800gt??? Any thoughts?
