ok check it out i have a 1.13 athlon 266 fsb (1.2 was about 10-15 bucks more didnt think it was worth it)

and i was wonder a couple of things first off whats the best way to unlock this puppy? i hear the pencil trick goes off after sometime and this defroser paint how much is it may i ask and also is it worth it to pay 20 bucks for those stickers that connect the l1 for u??

ok i also wanted to know about how much do u think i should overclock my 1.13.. i have about 35 - 37c idle so like 36 most of time when surfing net.. and full load (convert to mpeg 4, playing divx clip, dvd movie off my dvd rom, and playing max pyne on a kyro 2 card which im sure most of u know has no t&l support and makes cpu take slack, max visual setings) i did this only for a couple of min like 5 to 8 min and i got 39c almost 40c (all this temp and everything is based on the via hardware monitor system v2.04)

here are my specs

1.13 athlon on 266 fsb
256, 133 sd ram
ECS K7VZA (newest bois update alrdy flashed)
Hercules Prophet 4500 (based on kyro 2 chipset and not overclocked in anyway)
30 gig western only 5700 rpm
3 fans (1 blowing from blow the HD, one blowing out next to cpu and one huge one on the PS mointed oddly on the rear and not under also blowing out..
a valcano II heatsink and fan (no thermal compound on cpu at this time, i ordered one and should be here soon so i will unlock it and give it some needed thermal compond) P.S i paid 30 bucks for that dam heatsink and fan which i later found out was only 7 bucks online
and a 12x dvd rom which cost me 40 bucks at FRYS and is also flashed with newest update.. as u can tell i like flashing roms :D

dont know what else u would need to know to help me out.. i added a pic of via hwm so u can get more info

also wanted to add the the heat is at 38c after booting of win98 SE dont know why but is maybe its from loading the OS dont know really but it drops back down to 36c in a couple of mins so it doesnt seem like much harm..

P.S thanks in advance for ANY help this is my first OC and would like it to be a good one after seeing my bro burn out a 350 amd from setting it to 550 LOL

P.S.S i have put about 500 bucks into this pc so far what u think i got good deals or could have done it with 400 bucks (in augest)

P.S.S im VERY new to this fourm but help out as much as i can in the hurc kyro 2 fourm and know how much people can seem dumb compared to u at times but cut me some slack ive tryed my best to prepare it for OC but hey im a newb just like u were once yes u were a newb once we all were ;)

Welcome to The Forums!
And the Insanity of Overclocking!

Ok, my friend, the system looks good, and current temps are ok by the readings....I don't entirely trust the readings from any of my sensors btw: I got one of those Radio Shack:D indoor/outdoor thermometers to double check, gives ambient and case temps, so I can check error margins.

I would not oc that thing until you get some thermal compound on it! Period. But while you are waiting for that to come in, if you haven't already, check out the Beginner's Guides on the front page. A lot of information is there that will help you get a better oc and a more stable pc.

There is also a CPU Database that will give you an idea of how others have done with your cpu.

That said, the Number 1 enemy of overclocking is HEAT!
I now have a #2 as well: IMPATIENCE! Take your time, don't rush things: people have cracked cores and burned up cpus becuase they were in a hurry!

Good luck and Good Reading;)

Yes, welcome to OC.com :D
I wouldn't even run stock without thermal compound. If nothing else, get some of the Radio Shack stuff for the interim.

first off i think i have one of those radioshake monitors lying around the house just going to take some digging up over all my other comp equp. that ive had for years ;) what should i do with the wire on the radioshake monitor? should i put it next to the chip or just stick it in there somewhere?? also i alrdy knew most of the info on the Beginner's Guides, but was wondering what was the best way to unlock the chip ive read on other fourms that the pencil trick wears off after sometime.. and how much that defroster paint was.. i dont plan to push it from 1.13 to 1.4 on my fist try i thought i would push it little by little like from 1.13 to 1.2 then see how hot it gets and how stable it is and the push it a little more and so on and so on.... or is there another way i should go at this??

I just stick my RS therm sensor in the case near the top- if the temp it gets is close to the one reported by the hardware the the sensors are probably ok: at least thats my theory.:)

I did the pencil trick on my first Athlon, but had stability issues: If you don't get very good contact, the siganls are weak, etc.
I use defogger epoxy, applied with the edge of an xacto knife.

I have a very bright light and a good magnifying glass too.

I lap my heatsinks pretty well too: best grit I've gotten so far is 1200 (or 1500, all out and don't remember!) but I'm going to get some 2000 sometime.

After unlocking a chip, I check all the multipliers, and if good, then I go back to default and start raising FSB. I like to get as much FSB as I can because it speeds up the whole system.

After FSB is set I go for multi. again: here is where it gets funky!

The fsb may have to go down a bit, depending on the limits of the chip, so there is some trial and error here to find the sweet spot.

I also take the time to go through this at default voltages, and then with the voltages as high as temps allow. Once I see what I can get with both, I go with the best oc and start trying to drop volts until I lose stability. Bump volts up one setting, and then test! I usually test for a couple of weeks until I'm 100% stable, and then..............I wipe out the os and do a clean install!

It takes a while, but I've been getting good results!

Take your time, save your chip!

Easy Ozzman, one post at a time!:D

The first, on unlocking L1s: thats what I do.

On the Stickers: the empty blocks on the bottom is where you put the codes, and the stickers come in strips: I thinks the Athlons were 7 in each strip. But take a look at the whole thread: someone posted about changes to the codes, I think.

And remember TAKE YOUR TIME!

Good luck, and Happy holidays!
