View Full Version : 1.5 @ 1.8 .. can we push more?

Ok, I got this baby up to 1.8Ghz running 512 Rimms, Abit Th7 socket 423, I've seen people push it beyond 2.0Ghz. My question is, is there a way to get more core voltage? My board shows more than 1.825v but I cannot use more than that for some reason. I'm pretty sure if I can get more vcore, I can hit the 2.0 easily, I tried to O/C'ed it up to 1.91 but it's not stable, it reboots every 6-7hrs hehehe, meaning no more voltage to CPU IMO.. Ideas? :) .. Thanks!

Before you increase the voltage more, what type of cooling are you using?? This will be critical if you're going into the 'insane' territory of higher-than-safe voltages :D .
What are your current temps with your current cooling?
39c-41c Idle.. I Mod'ed my case for overclocking, temp is going awesome so far with 1.8 :)
Don't take this the wrong way, but you seem to be skirting the two most important details:
1 -- Heatsink/fan being used
2 -- Temps under full load
;)
For the record I won't help you fry your cpu.

hmmm... that seems pretty high for idle temp. Monitor your full load temp to see what you'll get and how stable it is. You said your oc'ed 1.9 reboots every 6-7 hrs hmmm..... Does it reboot when it's sitting at idle? or at load? If it's at load and reboots at that rate, that's pretty good man. Also take into consideration having a good PSU and providing you plenty of power. Those P4 OC'ed to those levels consume a lot of power and generate lots of heat from the core. Are you using a standared Factory HSF?? if not, what HSF are you using? But if the idle temp is at that level, your full load could be much higher.
Ok, here's the situation, it's smooth and stable with this temp I just reported when Idling, but but but, it's still cool @ 45~48 on heavy load. I'm using thermal compound with orb 5000rpm H/S.. I truly understand your fear of burning this cpu, but hey! no fear no gain hehe. it reboots on 1.9+ when I'm doing something, but never reboots when it's idle...
I suspected as much.
The orb probably isn't cutting the higher voltages/speeds and the heat is probably the reason why :(.
Arctic Silver II or better compound with a good copper heatsink might yield better cooling results...
There are other variables to take into consideration (memory and bus speed maximums, etc), but it seems like the cooling issue will have to be addressed first.
Sorry for the bad news, you're on the fringe of overheating :eek: . This is, of course, just my opinion... and you're free to ride that voltage onward and upwards if you so choose ;).
Thats a good overclock but if you had a 478 pin chip it'd probably go more.
Your idle temps do seem high and I might think your full load temperatures could be above 50 which gets to a danger point that you shouldn't take. You should get a better cooler and see how it goes.

You have some room left to get to higher speeds but first you need to get your temps down. #1 the orb is junk, when i upgraded from a cheap HSF to a good one i got quite a few more MHZ out of my current CPU. #2 when overclocking your CPU will become tempermental about temps even in the mid range, my CPU clocked to the max will lock up if it even gets to 33C. Your temps are way to high if you want to see 2G. What kind of case cooling do you have? do you have a good HSF on your northbridge? have you rounded your flat ribbon cables for better airflow through case ? [along with cleaning up all other wires]
There are ways to get your CV higher but i really cant blame Pinky for not telling you until you get your temps down, if he told you and you did the vidpinng you may either fry your CPU or even with the extra CV you may not get that much farther.

LOL... that's if I even knew :p ... but after as many responses as I've had here I can recognize almost immediately if someone's ready to push their hardware based on what they do/don't supply off-the-bat.
I'm sure a quick gander at the intel specs sheet we could determine a mod for the pins that will bump the core... and even if not, better cooling may get you that extra mhz you want without even raising the voltage.
Rule #2 (besides having a good motherboard) in overclocking -- Heat is the enemy.
