We, my father and I, are building a computer for my grandparents for christmas. We are having problems.
It is mostly some older stuff I had.
A Gigabyte 5AX motherboard
AMD K6-2 @450
Abit Siluro GeForce2MX200 Video card
WD200BB hard drive
300W PSU

We put it together and installed Windows 2000 Pro, no problem. Screen looks normal for 16 color, 480X640 mode. We then installed the video drivers that came with the card, I did not look at the version. That CD installed DirectX 8. When it rebooted it is not right, the screen is blurred and has repeating columns, like if the refresh rate is one the monitor can not handle. We removed those drivers and installed Detonator 12.41, same thing. We formated, reloaded W2K and installed the detonator drivers without DirectX. Same problem as before.

I remembered there being drivers for the AGP that came with the mobo. When I tried to install them, they said they were not needed except under Win 9X and exited the install program.

Anybody have any ideas or sugestions?

yea i've had a similar problem with my old system too. It seemed as if my voodoo couldn't handle to higher resolution. So i could only set it at 800*600. :(

mess with your refresh rate, resolution and monitor instal, at one point u might get so u cannot even see the screen, just go to safe mode and change back, i used to get that stuff all the time when messing with linux and configuring an Xserver, used to drive me nuts

Duh.

I was being stupid, but you guys set me straight.
In Windows 2000 safe mode does not let you change he refresh rate. I did not see the option, so I did not even think of it. Really dumb, I even mentioned it in my description. With W2K you have to use VGA mode, a kind of safe mode. I am running through them now. It is not 60, 85 or 100. The pattern of blur changed so I think this is the right track...lets try 70 next....
