Well got my Athlon XP yesterday. I've said that in almost every post hehe. What can I say? I LOVE THIS CPU. Well I've decided to reinstall the OS but cause I have a some stupid problems and my PC's pretty much overloaded with stuff. So it's time to clear everything up. Well I'm currently using Win2k in which I truly like cause it's stable and fast. But Win XP does look nicer and has a higher compatibility with apps. And since I've got an Athlon XP, Win XP should run ok (XP+XP). So what do you all think? Is Win XP worth it. I didn't like it the first time I used it.

i came from a long history of Win2k,i did a clean install to XP and have never looked back...i love XP for its fast boot-ups and great stability, also for its compatibility mode(that saved me a couple of times on older programs) it does however come with a lot of "bloatware" but if you tweak it right and disable everything you do not need it screams!so IMHO it is worth it!

I need to save my posts and just cut n paste the reasons to upgrade. it really is nice. you won't regret it. go with pro should be only 199 for the upgrade and you might look for the student version if you can.

Or you can order some hardware and get an OEM disc for less

It's even cheaper at Newegg, Mwave and some others though.

i figure i might as well throw in my 2 cents... i'm not too happy with XP at the moment. it's given me nothing but troubles with games so far, and the media player has been a real pain in the butt. movies keep kicking out errors, and XP keeps offering to send a report to microsoft about them (or whatever). maybe i did something wrong, but i've gone thru multiple OS's before, and never had any annoying probs like this. once i get a big hd for backing up all of my mp3s/movies/etc., i'm going to reinstall XP for about the 4th time. if that doesn't do it, i'll most likely head back to 98se or 2k.

Stay with Win2k.

WinXP's not ready for use yet. I'd recommend it only for people who want to upgrade from 95/98/ME because 2k doesn't offer an upgrade path (have to start from scratch). XP is also lacking in the networking department and also its gonna take a while for drivers to be written for it. Its got a few cool features, but nothing to pull you away from Win2k.

Look at the security holes that are popping up in WinXP, give it another year (it took 2k a year to be usable). One of my friends is having awful registry problems and other strange errors in XP after it ran flawlessly for a few weeks.

Win2k is currently the best of the Windoze in my opinion.

Oh, and AMD naming their CPU "Athlon XP" is just a stupid marketing attempt that's just gonna cause confusion.

Windows 2000 is the best operating system Microsoft has ever released. They should've stopped there.

First of all 'Athlon XP' stands for 'Athlon eXtra Performance', and has nothing to do with Windows XP, it's just a very conveniant chosen name. I've been working with XP for a month but switched back to w2k last week. I miss the look and feel of XP but nothing more. After the XP install I had to get new programs for watching DVD's, Burning CD's, my PCTV board didn't work anymore, it has no ASPI so no ripping CD's with the software you had for this, needed to regedit to be able to use my default picture viewer, and somehow XP kept removing the file extensions from my Digicam's CF-cards thus rendering them useless for the camera. (Canon, Nikon and Olympus have warnings on their sites about this and are advising to use 98/me/2k) Then there often were these delays of one or two seconds when you start a proggy or click on something, so back to w2k it is! It's just as stable and everything works straight away!

I know that AMD naming their new Athlons " Athlon XP " doesn't mean anything. It's not really designed for Win XP. It's just a marketing thing I know but hey it does sound cool to say that I'm using my Athlon XP with Windows XP. Well I already know what I'm getting for christmas. My dad couldn't hide that XP PRO box from me. So I guess I'll check it out tomorrow when I get the PERMISSION to rip that box apart and put the CD in my PC. Anyways MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU ALL!!!!

I moved from 98SE to WinXP. If you can get all your hardware to work with XP then I'd say go for it. I love it. Boots in half the time compared to 98SE, I love the GUI, A lot easier to set up and use, the internet seems faster and I wouldn't go back.
About the driver issue, a lot of 2k drivers will work with XP. And of course, XP gives you bragging rights. I don't mind security holes, I'm a home user with nothing important on my HDD. I can live with all the updating ;)
