Im trying to install xp on my girlfriends comp but I keep getting this error:

Your computer may not have enough memory to examine the drive, or your Windows XP CD may contain some corrupted files.

This is an xp disc I get from my university and its sp2. I know it works from previous installs.

However, when i try to install with the original os disc the laptop came with, it works fine (this disc only has sp1 though). I know that i can use auto update to get sp2, but I think that is causing some errors on here comp.

your laptop original cd probably has some drivers and other hardware drivers specific to that laptop

this is what comes up on google when you search for the error

CAUSE
This problem may occur for one of the following reasons: • The motherboard of your computer may not be compatible with Windows XP.
• The BIOS of your computer may not be compatible with Windows XP.
• The hard disk you are installing to may be damaged.
• The Windows XP Setup CD may be damaged.

This page alos has resolutions that you can try out, this is a MS site

Wierd thing is that I can run sp2 when I install sp1 (manufac disc) and then dl and install sp2. The problem with this is that I believe im getting a registry error every time i install sp1 and upgrade to sp2, which is why i just want to install a sp2 disc. I checked the hard drive, ran chkdsk in recovery console and its running ok, but im not sure the bios/mobo is compatible. The laptop is a gateway 200xl or 200 ARC (cant tell) which is not supported anymore.

Does the manufact os disc have something totally specific to this laptop on it that it will only install xp with that disc? Also if it can install that disc doesn't that mean my hard drive is running normally.

I guess if you wanted to you could d/l a version of XP with SP2 already in the install
then you wouldn't have to worry, now you will get errors in the device manager as any version of XP is not going to have all the drivers Specific to your laptop, you would have to go to homepage of Laptop and d/l drivers individuall for whatever Device mgr can't recognize, it's do-able, but time consuming.
Another option as opposed to d/l individual drivers is download "Universal XP Drivers CD"
http://www.wincert.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=1048&pid=4876&st=0&#entry4876
So basically, get a copy of XP with SP2already installed during the XP setup, goto device manage, find out what devices are not recognized, make and use the Universal XP disk to find drivers - update post with your thoughts

Actually I am using an xp disc with sp2. I got it from my university (they offer free copies of xp). but the only one that will install is the manufacturers disc (sp1) that came with the laptop. Im not concerned about drivers because im pretty good at finding them, all i really want to do is install xp with sp2 in it already.

slipstream sp2 into the sp1 disk and copy it to another disc.
