View Full Version : EVGA Step-Up dilemma: 8800GTS 640MB ---> 8800GT 512
The step-up deadline on my current 8800GTS 640MB is this Friday, December 7th. With the release of the new 8800GTS (w/G92 core) rumored to be on the 11th, I'm in a tough spot. I have already called EVGA and the guy I talked to said that I can't get an extension on the deadline, but they "may" allow me to step-up if I exceed my deadline by a day or two. If I wait for the new GTS (the card I really want), then I risk missing the deadline by 4 days - and that's *if* the new GTS is released on December 11th.
The EVGA rep said it's up to me if I choose to wait for the G92 8800GTS, but he did not have any information on when the new cards would be released and he could not confirm release on the 11th. He seemed to be pushing me to step up to the 8800GT. I can "upgrade" to the 8800GT 512MB, but it kind of seems like a waste since the GT is $130 cheaper than my current card. Of course, the o/c versions of the GT and G90 GTS (which would be closer in price) are not available to step-up to. :(
Any comments / advice?

ouchies very tough spot, I would say step up to the gt so you don't miss the opportunity too.

I'm not too familiar with the step up program, but is it possible for you to step up to the GT then step up again?

I don't understand how it can be considered a waste to step up to the GT. It's a new card with a new core and performs better. What do you lose by stepping up to it?

No.

Several days shipping.
Get the GT while you can. If the GTS's come out and you want one you can always sell the GT and get a GTS.
dipspit: EVGA only allows you to step-up from the original card that you purchased. Once I "step-up" to another card, I can't repeat the step-up process again. It's a one-shot deal.
Vipasnipa: It seems like a waste to upgrade from a $390+ card to a $260 card with less memory, when the G92 8800GTS is just around the corner. EVGA's step-up program is supposed to allow you to upgrade within 90 days of purchase to a better card of equal or greater value - carrying the equity in your current card forward. In my case, I "lose" $130 worth of equity by upgrading to the less expensive 8800GT.
Lose equity yes but you get a much better card. So it evens out IMO...

Your best bet is to speak to a supervisor/manager and make him guarantee you a step up for the new GTS. "Maybes" and "ifs" are a sure way to lose your step up.

I would say risk and and just wait and say you had internet problems and you were unable to connect to a computer.
Thanks for the comments. I've been doing some more thinking about it.
Thought it would be a nice gesture, I don't feel that EVGA is at all obligated to extend the deadline. I've called them 3x and nobody has offered to extend the deadline or do anything else to help me upgrade to the G92 8800GTS. Sometimes you've got to be happy with what you can get. I think I'm just going to step-up to the 8800GT - it will be better than my current card, but not by the same margin that the new GTS would have. If the new GTS is released before I reach the front of the queue for the GT (which may happen), then I'll call & ask someone if I can change it to a GTS. Until then, I'll just expect to upgrade to the 8800GT.

He mentioned in the 1st post that he did. I don't know if he asked during all the calls though.
Roll the dice & wait for the GTS.
i kinda agree as well.
what you could do is step up to the 8800gt and just sell it on ebay or here
I'm thinking about doing the same to my 8800gtx. But i have allot of time (43 days) left before it closes :santa:
but yeah i would just get the 8800gt. cause with the odds they wont allow you to do cause your past the date.
you could do is do the step up this friday and select the 8800gt THEN when the gts comes out be like wtf and call them and bitch then they will switch it before it ships :)
really only difference there is is the extra shader processors. they are a good amount more but i have a feeling that it wont be that much more of a step up from the 8800gt.

When the GT was released, a friend of mine was thinking of stepping-up from his 320MB GTS, but was 4 days past the step-up deadline. He called EVGA, and they extended his deadline an extra 2 weeks, giving him time to decide. If you call and ask nicely, they shouldn't have too much of a problem giving you extra time.
i wounder if they will allow me to do the step up from a 8800gtx to the 8800gts (G92) ?

Well if there giving an option to upgrade to the new 8800GTS go for it. While its past the deadline they seem like they will work with you just make sure you call and confirm such that yes you want the new GTS.
Overall it will be a setup to your current card either way you look at it. Heck even the GT is a nice setup to your current card. While you do loose its value, then again nothing in the computer industry holds its value that well to begin with, well except nVidia's cards over the past year thing that has to be a record.

Did you look at the benchmarks? The GTS is marginally better than the GT.

It's a shame the step up program is only 3 months, I could have stepped up to Ultras had it even lasted 4 months. They've got it timed out pretty well.

The GTS is better yea but not by a lot.
