I'm wondering what kinda ppd should I expect by running WinSMP from a X2 4800+?? I'm "advising" my uncle for a new small/slim desktop. and wanna see how's the 4800+ do compare to a E6320-6420, stock vs stock. and see if the Intel part worth $100 more. (he's leaning to get the 4800+ one, one of those slim PC platform from HP)

A borg is a borg... I think unless he's into folding or if you're springing that extra $100 for the Intel chip, a 4800+ would be fine.

No idea what they actually fold though. All my AMD folders are single core boxes that are presently retired anyway.

THa AMDs do OK on the easy (p2604/5, p2651/3) WUs and barely make the deadlines on the cache intensive ones.

I think you're looking @ 360 PPd/Ghz on p2605 type WUs and 220 PPD/GHz on p2609 type WUs. The E6420 is going to be closer to 600 ppd/GHz on the p2605s and 500 ppd/GHz on the p2609 type WUs.

I beleive the current trend in WUs is more toward the p2609 (cache intensive) types.

Hmm...I don't remember what X2 I have at work. Lemme post and check my sig.

EDIT: 3800+, nevermind. :D

My 2.7GHz 170 makes right at 1200ppd (p2605) & 900ppd (p2609) on WinSMP.

That's 444.44ppd/GHz on p2605 & 333.33ppd/GHz on p2609. A bit better than the ChasR's estimate. ;)

yeah, I was looking for your reply Harlam!

Thanks for all the replies guys!!

we've just place an order from Dell Inspiron 530. most small form factore desktop (and it's desktop alone, no monitor!) that we saw is around $600 or so w/ something like 4800+/5000+ or E63xx/64xx. but I found a $350 off coupon for anything $999+ from Dell. therefore, we loaded the machine w/ a E6550, 2GB of ram, 15in1 reader, etc., plus a 17" wide screen monitor for $1035 (included pay them 6 bucks to plan a tree :D ), w/ the coupon, it comes out to $685+free 2nd day shipping!

it should reporting to duty sometimes next week or so.... ;)

(sorry AMD, I've tried..... :p )

lol.... have them plan a tree/weed/grass for me at least that will somehow make me feel a little better due to my power consumption. :santa:

seriously, Dell has a program that on every computer you buy, pay them $4-6, they will plan a tree for you. their reason is to try to offset the power consumption that computer will do. but anyway, if they really do, it's always nice to have more tree on the planet I guess.
