View Full Version : New SATA HD not loading drivers?
I have a Asus K8V motherboard, and I bought a new SATA SeaGate HD. When I start the pc I boot from the windows disc, since its a fresh install. I press F6 to load 3rd party drivers and insert the SeaGate cd. My pc only checks the floppy for the disk though.
If I try to load windows without the drivers I get the "no hard disks found" error.

See if it will boot from the CD that came with the Seagate HDD.
Set the BIOS to boot from CD and insert the Seagate CD and see if ti boots. This will probably allow you to run the setup utility for the HDD.
I tired booting from the SeaGate disc, but all I got was the flashing cursor on black screen.

disable raid if it is enabled in the bios...that usually fixes it. =)

Set the BIOS to boot from CD and insert the Seagate CD and see if ti boots. This will probably allow you to run the setup utility for the HDD.That might work, or if your HDD didn't come with a CD (OEM drive) you'll need to do one of the following things:
1) Create a floppy disk (3.5") with the appropriate SATA drivers for the controller ON YOUR MOTHERBOARD. The driver CD that came with your motherboard should have a utility that will do this for you. Otherwise, you'll need to find out what type of controller you have and get the appropriate drivers.
2) Use a Windows XP CD that has Service Pack 2 integrated. It's pretty easy to make one of these via the slipstreaming process. Let me know if you want instructions. The WinXP CD w/ SP2 should come with the drivers needed to recognize the HDD.

There is no reason for it, if he doesn't use raid.... disable it and it will go away. or reset the bios to default, even quicker.

There is no reason for it, if he doesn't use raid.... disable it and it will go away. or reset the bios to default, even quicker. Unfortunately, that's not always the case. My old A8V Deluxe had a Promise SATA controller, and the original Windows XP CD did not have the necessary drivers to recognize any SATA drives attached, regardless of whether the controller was set to RAID or non-RAID mode. The only solution was to use a WinXP CD w/ SP2, or load the Promise SATA drivers from a floppy.
I noticed some of you mentioning XP sp2.
The disc I am loading Windows from does have the latest sp2 updates.

The disc I am loading Windows from does have the latest sp2 updates. In that case, the WinXP w/ SP2 disc does not have the required drivers as I thought it did. You will need to make a floppy disk with the drivers, or you will need to make a customized WinXP CD with the drivers included (you can do this with the program called nLite).
BTW, I looked up the specs on your motherboard and you have both a VIA and a Promise SATA/RAID controller. Which one are you using? If you use the VIA controller instead of the Promise controller it may solve your problem, but the Promise controller is better for overclocking. I know from firsthand experience that you need to create a driver disk to use the Promise controller.
Your motherboard CD should have the utility to make the necessary floppy
Okay, well I don't have the motherboard cd...it was lost in a move...and I don't have access to computer with a burner. I only have access to my work computer, but it does have a cd-rom and floppy drive.

A cursor often is because of a corrupted MBR. Please wipe the HDD and try again.

A cursor often is because of a corrupted MBR. Please wipe the HDD and try again. He can't even do that because the motherboard can't see the hard drive!
c8r9x: You need to tell us exactly what motherboard model you have (K8V, K8V Deluxe, K8V-X, etc.), because there are 8 of them on the Asus website and some of them have Promise controllers while others just have the VIA controller. Next, if you have a board that has the Promise controller, you need to tell us if your hard drive is connected to one of the VIA ports or one of the Promise ports. I can't really help you any more until you provide this information.
I am 99% sure its an Asus K8V-X
This is it here:

Enter your motherboard model and download driver under the RAID heading for your OS. It's called VIARAID220d.zip Extract the zip to your desktop and inside there is a folder called Driver Disk in that folder is a MakeDisk.exe that will make your floppy for you. Might want to make 2 copies and then use the F6 to load the driver and your drive will be seen properly by windows.
