my temps are hitting 83c while playing fear, its got an unlocked vertex pipiline and is overclocked to 344.35 on the core and 737.10 on the memory

is this bad?

What/how many fans do you have for case flow? Does the video card have a fan? Is it working?

If you open your case and put a box fan up to it (or any large airflow fan) and point it at the video card, do temps drop alot?

If you want, you can take pics and post them here ;)

I remember slapping a NV5 Silencer onto my 6800gt and it dropped 7c idle 12c load. Had done a vMod in vBios as well.

Those temps are high, but not that unreasonable on stock cooling. Try blowing the vid card cooler out with compressed air can, usually helps alot if you havent done so in awhile. Arctic Cooling Accelero did wonders when I had a 6800gs, for a reasonable price... never loaded over 65C iirc.

hah I had my 6800gt get up to 134C then died.
It kept alive at 120C before it started to throttle itself.

I ended up taking it apart and there was thick chunks of dust inside the heat sink, I didn't do somthing right because after cleaning it out, the temps went down, but as soon as I fired up the game, it got even worse, ~134C then a screw popped off and landed on the graphics card and WHAM fired card.

Glad it happened though, it gave me a reason to buy a 8800gt!

ill take pics and blow dust out later, the cards kind of cramped in my case, i have the side open slightly

its on a cooler that looks like this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835185124 same brand and everything just not the exact model.

edit :: its a little more th en 83c, its hitting 90 at peak

pull the card out before you hit it with the compressed air... no need to blow all that dust onto the rest of the components in your rig. When was the last time you blew out the cooler? I'm betting it will make a big difference...

from the bare eye the cooler didnt look dusty at all, but since my cpu heatsink and fans and other components were somewat caked in dust i just blew the whole case out, now my idle temps are at 38c from the low50's, and im not sure about load temps yet

fear scares the pants off me at night so i guess cs:s will be the chosen one :-p

ran the cs:s stress test a few times temps didnt get above 55c, also ran fear stress test with the same results, as well as with ati tool.

thank you all for your help :)

quick question tho on overclocking, i use rivatuner to oc and atitool to roughly test for artifacts, when i set my memory clocks in rivatuner for performance 3d it also changes the 2d mem clocks, is this normal?/good?

i dont think that having the vid card ram run at OCed speeds in 2D apps is a problem, iirc my 6800gs was the same way. Good to see that blowing out your rig made a noticable improvement. Now, just remember to do this every so often... :soda:
