windows media player (xp) errors?

just wondering if you guys have any ideas for me here. nearly every time i try playing a movie file, i get an error within the first few seconds, after which windows xp offers to send the error to microsoft, etc. sometimes the sound continues in the background while this is going on, sometimes it locks the program completely. i'm getting near my end with xp, it's just been too much of a hassle so far. i couldn't find any media player updates from microsoft. i'm running the latest audigy xp drivers, and the latest from nvidia if that helps. any ideas would be much appreciated. tia

what formats have u tried to run? I used to get a similar problem when trying to play some divx files. Turned out that i needed to update my codex. :D

as an addition, it seems that if i close the program after i get the error, then immediately try to open the same file again, 99% of the time it will run without a hitch.

i've tried running divx encoded avi's (newest codecs installed), mpeg's, wmv's, you name it :confused:
