Alright, so the X2 3800+ in my sig was temporarily removed from SMP duty when I upgraded to Gutsy Gibbon. It's my work computer, and that comes first.

Unfortunately, when I upgraded, I got 32 bit by mistake, and didn't realize it until a week later when I tried to run SMP folding. So, I got VMWare and installed a super-stripped-down 64-bit Gutsy inside a VM. So I'm running Gutsy64 within Gutsy32. Screwy.

Anyway, so I come in to work today, glance at the VMWare screen, only to find that this thing is apparently chugging away at 4 minutes per frame. I think, oh crap, it's doing a single-core WU.

A glance at the log, however, indicates that it is working on a 2605, which is an SMP WU.

Snippet from the log
[02:23:38] Completed 340000 out of 500000 steps (68 percent)
[02:23:38] Extra SSE boost OK.
[02:27:41] Writing local files
[02:27:41] Completed 345000 out of 500000 steps (69 percent)

Do I have a mislabeled WU, or have I just stumbled upon the Holy Grail of folding?

OK, it wasn't right.

It appears to have something to do with the clock in the VM. For some reason it's not keeping track of time properly, so the times between steps are fux0red.

I was going to say there is no such thing as magic, but you have that figured out already.

I've had absolutely no luck running VMWare on AMD cpus. The clocks, host & client, just won't stay sync'd.

I believe it's due to the lack of any hardware based Virtualization. I think this is a lost cause for 939 but I just upgraded the Bios on my Biostar AM2 mobo and was surprised to see an option for Virtualization. Maybe we got some goods in AM2 that I'm unaware of. Why else would there be an option there to enable it? ;)

FYI I'm pretty sure 039 opterons have AMD-V but not 100% about regular athlons. I'm 95% sure though because without it you wouldn't be running a 54bit os on a 32bit host.

VMWare tools, if installed, can keep the clocks synced between guest and host.

I don't have that installled, I'll have to get it next time I'm at work.
