So do you have to type with two fingers on that keyboard?
The thing I don't like about those is the max resolution on the screen :( Otherwise they seem like a pretty good bargain.
I saw this at my local computer store but it was black. One complaint I heard about it is that the keys make loud clicking noises so it's embarassing to use in a quiet environment, is that true?

Not a huge deal :)
I'm probably going to get the 4GB one when I get my tax returns back.

loud fans? Its a Celeron 900Mhz... I can't imagine anything loud in it
I would imagine that they could make a passive mobile celeron system (VIA did it with the C7)

People are stating it runs very hot...so its quite possible the cooling they used isn't exactly top notch.

I've had my eee(click link in my sig) since the first of November, love it alot. I've not found it to be hot in the least, just a warm spot on the underside which is cooler than other laptops I've used. I've not heard any objectionable noise from it at all. I'm running Ubunto 7.10 on it at the moment; probably go with Debian or FreeBSD in the future. The default Xandros "simple mode" desktop was too freaky(Fisher-Price looking).
It's great for travel- took it to Vermont over Thanksgiving, picked up wifi in the airport instantly. Since it doesn't have alot of storage space, I just bring along a couple pendrives with my 'must have' files on them. There's a eee user forum- http://forum.eeeuser.com/ that's got alot of helpful informatiuon, including a WIKI.

I have a few questions as I am planning to buy one after christmas with my money and tax returns...
a) How much RAM do you have?
b) How loud is the fans and keyboard keys...I want to use this in class, so in your personal opinion, would the laptop be a disturbance at all noise wise?
c) How is the 800x480 resolution? Is it horrible to view webpages with or is it bearable?
d) How good is your battery? Have you tested it out? I would be happy with 2hrs 30mins with medium light....and any higher would just be great.
e) Hows the build quality? Does it "feel" cheaply made? Any creeks in the body or bending plastic anywhere?
f) How solid is the screen and its hinges? Does the screen flex under pressure, is the back of the lid solid or more bendy? Do the hinges feel pretty solid?
EDIT: g) Is there a horizontal scroll for the touchpad?
If you could answers those, that would be very much appreciated! I am so anxious to get one :D

I just got my g/f one for x-mass and here is my opinion.
I have a few questions as I am planning to buy one after christmas with my money and tax returns...
a) How much RAM do you have?
Stock 8g is 1gb i run 2gb
b) How loud is the fans and keyboard keys...I want to use this in class, so in your personal opinion, would the laptop be a disturbance at all noise wise?
Fans are very quiet on my 8g. Keys are like a typical normal laptop and very quiet.
c) How is the 800x480 resolution? Is it horrible to view webpages with or is it bearable?
I can read text just fine and the stock resalution looks very good. You can run 800X600 on it but you must scrole some but the stock resalution is easy on the eyes and i have no problerm reading webpages.
d) How good is your battery? Have you tested it out? I would be happy with 2hrs 30mins with medium light....and any higher would just be great.
3 hours 40 min. screen set at 80% brightness, sound at 100% wifi on cpu at the stock 650mhz playing a dvd. With the right tweeks i could see 4 hours of batt. life pretty easy.
e) Hows the build quality? Does it "feel" cheaply made? Any creeks in the body or bending plastic anywhere?
Qualty is very nice. Better than i expected. Plastic seems a little thin but its not to bad, something you would expect if they scaled a laptop down that much. My 8g has no creaks and it feels like a mini laptop. I just wouldent beat it around or drop it.
f) How solid is the screen and its hinges? Does the screen flex under pressure, is the back of the lid solid or more bendy? Do the hinges feel pretty solid?
Its pretty solid. I dident get a chance to pull on it its wraped up for my g/f for tomorrow but i have no complanets about the hinges.
EDIT: g) Is there a horizontal scroll for the touchpad?
No. The mini mouse included does have a scrole wheel and maybe in newer updats and bio's revisions they may enable a touch pad scrole since the touch pad you can tap on to click icons. maybe they will do a tap then scrole down by moveing your finger then tap to stop.
If you could answers those, that would be very much appreciated! I am so anxious to get one :D
I was going to buy her the 4g but im glad i got her the 8G. Just be shure to do some of the tweeks outlined in the eee pc forums. If you need a link pm me. Im very pleased with the laptop and im getting one for my self after the first of they year. If you get one go with a 8G and you wont regreat it.

I'm looking to get either one of these or the 4G for notes at school and for a little computer to take with me around to the different places I go. And from the reviews I've read on the internet and this thread I'm definitley going to get one, but I just don't know if the 4gigs and 512mb of ram are worth the extra $100.

I am assuming you mean 4G vs 8G?
This is what its down to:
The bigger hard drive allows the OS more room. With the 4GB drive, you will have to use nlite and create a streamlined windows (I would regardless to save space). The RAM can be upgraded separately for pretty cheap on the side so that isn't a big concern.
I would personally go for the 4G if you intend to use it for school (like I am). I currently have a streamlined XP and the folder is 1.2GB with all the latest updates....now that would leave ~2.6GB of free space on the HDD. I will be purchasing an 8GB SDHC card as well so that totals me to ~10.2GB free HDD space.
I would probably put Warcraft III on the laptop for funs sake, but that still leaves me 5GB on the SDHC card which is PLENTY enough.
I would honestly go for the 4G over the 8G if school is its purpose. If you run out of space....go for a 16GB SDHC card (even though the price climbs fast at this point, its an option).
Another option is to buy a USB Mini HDD (you can get a 60GB for about $50) and that is easily stowable in a case.
I get paid tomorrow night, so at that point I will decide how long I can last without hitting the submit button

Well I won't be putting windows on it, I will either have ubuntu, debian, or use the advanced version of Xandros. But that all depends on how much I like the advanced version of Xandros. But I just got a bonus from my work, xmas monies, and my paycheck on Friday so I'll be purchasing one probably tomorrow lol. But yeah I think I'll probably get the 4G, and I have a laptop hdd laying around so I can just buy an external enclosure for that for extra space and upgrade the ram to 2 gigs.
And do these have 2 slots for ram or just 1, because I think I saw just 1.

Yes its just one. 1GB should be enough, but 2GB is better. The only downside to 2GB with this is that hibernation takes longer to load back up. <- not that I personally care waiting an extra 10seconds lol.

Yeah I'm not too worried about the extra 10 sec coming back from hibernation. I think I'll be ordering this later today with 2gigs of ram. And what are the SDHC cards? I'll be looking it up but I've never heard of it before.

They are simply flash storage. They are basically the same as the USB jump drives you can buy, except are flat and go right into the Eee on the side. I'm going to get an 8GB one. If you find a good deal let me know!

Over at the eee pc forums I guess they've been having problems with installing SDHC cards in all of the different types of eee pc's. But they work in external card readers, but it just seems like the cards are hit and miss with each of the computers.
http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=1203
And also I've been thinking about getting the 4G surf instead because I haven't heard stellar reviews about the camera and I don't think $50 is worth the extra 50 minutes of battery life so I might be going with that. But do those have the little back plate to where you can change the ram?
Edit: Here's an 8gb SDHC card for 39.98 after mir from newegg but I'm still looking around at some http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820208293
Edit 2: Well I just bought a 4G and 2gb of ram from zipzoomfly, and then I'll be buying a SDHC card at best buy because I just got a $10 gift certificate there heh. So I hope it's good, and the card reader works lol.

I remember reading that in order to upgrade the ram, you have to break a seal that in effect voids the warranty. Is this true?

If your planning to use it for school, I'd really suggest going for the 4G...you also get a slip case and apparantly the Surf models have the RAM soldered....although you will have to double check that <-

Asus confirmed warranty is NOT affected. It was just hype due to a sticker.
