Hey I was just wondering if there were any aftermarket cooling solutions for the 8800gt. I would like to purchase an 8800gt, and would like to overclock it. I was wondering if there was an aftermarket air cooling solution that enables the 8800gt to overclock better than it would be able to with the stock fan/heatsink design.

Quick convert him to the S1!
Also, after market cooling doesn't really help the OC as it is voltage limited :(

I am almost afraid to ask because I know that I will want to try it...
What is the volt mod?
Does it void the warranty? (i plan on getting an XFX or EVGA)

yes it does,
but the bios softmod is hard to recognize( I don't think they check for that)
and get the S1, I am getting it too :D

How much space would the S1's take up in SLI? Would any mobo's still have a free PCI slot after installation? As well would their be any issues with one of those large CPU tower heatsinks (Tuniq Tower, Ultra 120, etc)? Thanks.

You would be able to run them passively in SLI, but not with fans(maybe a thin fan)...but problem with that is there wouldn't be much airflow...and it would be drawing hot air from the other 8800GT, defeating the point anyway.
It doesn't interfere with any CPU heatsinks.

The official S1 site (http://www.arctic-cooling.com/vga2.php?idx=138) says you need a special SLI cable to reach over the heatsinks, as they do stick out about 1inch or so over the actual card.

The card doesn't need voltage regulator heat sinks to operate. We tested that the card just ran flawlessly without voltage regulator heat sinks.
Buy extra heatsinks for them.

The beauty of the S1 is that it requires very little airflow to cool effectively, as long as there is some airflow through it and decent case ventilation. Something like a side panel fan that hits both S1s in an SLI setup wuld probably be enough. Also, just removing the PCI slot covers adjacent to the S1 and negative case pressure (more exhaust fans than intake) will naturally pull air through them.

ViperJohn has been screwing around with the 8800GT BIOS in another thread and from what I remember increasing the voltage only helps get a higher CORE clock, you need to slack the RAM timings of the card to get a higher memory, or something. You'll have to dig up his thread yourself though.
I'm trying to voltmod my own card but I plan to do it with a CD. Hopefully I can hit 750Mhz core.

I've no idea where to buy the cables, sorry. I don't plan to run SLI myself so I am pretty clueless about it, besides from the Voodoo era.
Also regarding the included heatsinks, heres a post I made on another forum
So I just got this card installed after like an hour. First time I put it into the case a RAM heatsink fell off, which I was angry about, then the fan was warped because of the pressure I used trying to get the damn Turbo Module to clip into the grill, which still hasn't happend though after a few more pushes the warping has became silent, THEN I knocked a different heatsink putting it back into the case, which meant I had to remove the entire ****ing thing again.
Still, my tempatures went from 45c/50c idle to 35c, and my system is tons quieter too. I'd recommend that ANYONE whos putting this card/heatsinks into their system either turn their system upside down til the **** sets or just use glue.
If I open up my case and find a RAM heatsink has fell off, I am probably going to destroy the entire card
They also don't come with any thermal paste or anything, besides the sticky pad 3M Thermal Tape. I just stuck them onto my memory as is and didn't bother applying AC and glue. Considering my system is 100% more quiet I could care less if the tempature went up to 60C, though thankfully it's 45C full load.
As long as you apply enough pressure onto the RAM sinks AND make sure you correctly clean off ALL the residue/whatever on the RAM from the previous HS+F, you shouldnt have any fall off unless you're careless, like I was.

As long as the fan directs the air into the S1 you should have good results. It was designed as a passive cooler... that's why it works so well with little airflow. The fins are widely spaced and there is a lot of surface area.
I've read that you need a flexible SLI cable (not the bridge type) to clear the S1. Asus makes one for their SLI boards, I'll hunt for a link.
As far as ramsinks go, everyone complains about the falling off. I didn't even bother trying. Just wiped the thermal tape off with alcohol and a finger, then used ceramique and a tiny dot of superglue on two corners of each chip.

Do the ramsinks come with some sort of thermal tape on them already? Or does one have apply something like AS5 to each chip? And I should have asked this question earlier, but does swapping the stock cooler out void the warranty on the card? Might be a pain to remove the ramsinks at a later time if needed if their superglued?

Yeah, they come with a very thin,clear thermal tape applied.
As far as voiding your warranty, that depends on the brand. EVGA still warranties with aftermarket cooling, or so I've heard.

-They usually come with tape.
-The tape is usually quite firm if you've cleaned the bonding area well enough.
-For BFG cards at least, it voids your warranty if you swap out the stock.
My question is, for anyone that has an 8800gt... is there some sorta void sticker on the heatsink or something? How the hell would they know that you took it off anyway? I already bought an thermalright hr-03gt and it kinda ****es me off that it voids the warranty :mad:.

good question...how do they monitor if you've taken the cooler off?
also, someone mentioned that there is some sort of BIOS update that can be done to help the overclocking potential of the card....what is that referring to? did i just make it up?

You can increase the default voltage from 1.05 to 1.1 volts by altering the bios which will enable you to overclock your card to higher speeds, you will need better cooling as it increases heat.

I don't think better cooling is 'required' if you do the 1.1v BIOS mod, but it definitely helps. Just cranking the stock fan speed up (which you should do anyway) will usually suffice, and the newer revision cards have slightly bigger fans (maybe you'll get one of those).
