First up Hi to one and all at OC Forums
To briefly explain i decided to build a machine, one that was better than you could get in the average store and i built it because i wanted to play all the latest game with out worrying about hardware and all that jazz,
So i have an intel x6800 extreme processer
8 gigs of OCZ Reaper Ram
2 x gts8800 640mb graphics cards
850 watt power supply
Windows Vista ultimate 64bit
My question about games is...i have been told ny machine specs are good, so why the hell is it that the likes of crysis and oblivion and COD4, when i auto detect...they set every thing to medium...surely i can do better
Any help would be great as once i get my head around this i can move on to this over clocking business!!

Monster machine. O_o
Crank your settings up, your system can definitely handle it.
definately crank up your settings to max. You should be able to handly any game out there right now with ease. Well, actually I haven't messed around with crysis yet and I'm not sure what type of power you need to run it with everything max out but I would think that your comp would be able to handle it. Just because a game auto-detects at medium settings doesn't mean you can't turn them up. I remember back when I had my 6800 and a p4 @ 3.8ghz my favorite game, call of duty 2, would detect at medium settings but I could easily play with everything max out (except dx9).
Never auto-detect. Always tweak the settings yourself to what you deem to be acceptable. Most likely you'll be able run every game out there at maxed settings. The only game you won't be able to run at totally maxed settings at very high resolutions is Crysis. Everything else you'll be able to run it with every option set to high.

aahhhh i see.....so i dont have to do as the game tells me....well i tried and true enough i bumped all to very high in crysis on a res of 1680 x 1050 so i presume thats kinda good.....Also i get a Vista rating of 5.2, what does this go up to?? is it important....i gotta say the hardware side of building a machine is so much easier than the software, i even have a thing call uguru that was with my motherboard...it say all i have to do is click and it will over clock automatically....well i did this and Boo-Hoo it says over clock failed...well thanks guys..it looks like i came to the right place

wow 8 gigs??? Is there even a game out there that utilizes 8 gigs. You must be doing some video editing.
also vista rating goes up to 5.9. Also I wouldnt trust an automatic overclock. Definitely look around ocf for some tips on how to overclock.
8 gigs..yeah i know...but at the time of building the 2 gig chips were there so i kinda bought them just to be sure i had enough..plus they have cool looking metal things on top..although you guys prob have a differant name for them

Welcome to the Forums.
How much did all this cost you? What motherboard are you using?

Yes, heatsinks. Vista only goes up to 5.9. I'm curious as to why you got 5.2 when on my lesser system, I get 5.9. Perhaps a slow hard drive? But as stated, you should be able to max out every game but Crysis.

Technically, heatspreaders, as heatsinks are designed to dissipate heat through fins into the air, while heatspreaders are more to spread the heat farther out over a flat surface.
But that's a monster rig. Why didn't you go with a Quad core instead of the dual core extreme edition?

The 5.2 is probably from your hardrive score (mine is the same) as Vista takes the lowest score of the five and sets it as your overall. The score really doesn't mean much, but if you want to get it up set up a raid array (unless you have raptors).
Take a look at some of the stickies or other threads about overclocking. You'll probably run into some stability problems overclocking with 8 gigs of ram. This doesn't mean it isn't impossible, just more difficult.
Your setup is sick! You definitely will not have problems running games on high settings for some time to come.

and the quad core...well my brother works for a ahem..company and the dual core extreme was damn cheap that all....
I quite like the idea of a hard drive called a Raptor....what makes them stand out? i just have hard drives...normal hard drives!!
i gotta head to work but when i get home i will post up the full lot of what i fit in the box...may be a few pics aswell
