View Full Version : WinXP on SDHC slow?
i'm thinking about getting a eee pc which has an interanl 4gb ssd drive which i was thinking about putting ubuntu on simply because i wont need any more than 4 gb for ubuntu but i also wanted to put winXP on an SDHC so if i can't find some software for linux i can get it for windows and also for play some games, so i was wondering if winXP will be slow on a SDHC, compared to a 7200 rpm hard drive?
thanks

Forget it.. I just tried installing XP on my USB 4gig drive, and failed with a BSOD every time. Either fat32 or NTFS..
But ubuntu worked perfectly...

It's possible to get XP working on an SD card, but it's a huge PITA. IMO it's not worth the trouble, but if you wanna try it, theres a section over on the MP3Car forums that offers a wealth of information/discussion on the matter. (Mostly aimed at CF cards and USB sticks, but the basics are the same for SD.) Of course, it also kinda depends whether the SD reader in the eeePC is bootable. If it's not, you're prolly SOL.
As far as speed... overall it'll be a bit slower than a recent 7200rpm HD due to lower transfer rates and lack of DMA, but that'll be partially offset by the low access times of flash memory. Use a higher-speed SD card (120x or greater would give the best results) and it'll give acceptable performance.
Honestly, though, anything that can't be run/doesn't exist on Linux prolly won't run very well on such weak hardware to begin with, so I'm not sure I see the point of going to the trouble.

The USB drive I just got is the fastest available, 200x 30MB/s 120x is only 18MB/s..
