short question.. is it possible to "upgrade" to win2k over a previous xp install? i'm nearly positive i'm going to make the switch, but was just wondering if it's possible to do it 'upgrade' style as opposed to a reformat, in which i'd have to reinstall everything and take a few days to get my program settings back to 'where they were'. tia

Well for starters thats a downgrade not an upgrade. As far as I know you will have to reformat.

You may not need to reformat. But you will lose your software and settings. I think just erase XP and installed software (but not data) and install 2k onto the existing partition.
You can't "erase" xp unless you had a previous OS installed before XP. Only way to erase it would be to reformat if it was a clean install.
Just format and install Win2k. XP is trash anyways, and w/ it being an NT5 OS, you couldn't simply upgrade.
Hmm.. Well unless you've upgraded from Windows 2K and when it prompted you to have a System Restore and you did select yes then you can do a system restore not knowing how well that works.
If not you will have to format since I don't think Windows XP is any great once you use Windows 2000.
Hope you have two partitions then you can just move it on the next partiton and format the main windows drive and install windows 2000.

well, chalk up another format/install in my book for windows xp  *hopefully* this will be the last time. things seem to be going well so far.
Would removing the i386 folder allow it?
I wouldn't try it. You'd probably end up formatting.

I suppose it would be difficult with all the user directories and NTFS file security (however if it is FAT it is trivial to erase). But there is always a way to preserve data (say he has like 10 gigs of mp3s or something).. for example using software like Partition Magic to create a partition for data but still reformat the system partition.
But for simplicity's sake, just reformat the sucker! :D

done :D i went under into control panel > system > advanced > performance, and clicked "adjust for best performance". wow.. it seems like everything's going so much quicker within the os. it got rid of all the pretty shaded menu bars, etc., but if you're looking for windows to pop up in a snap and all, it's the way to go. btw, xp seems to be treating me well now after my 7th reformat/reinstall
I had to disable all the pretty little features in XP to get it to run fast as well. The only advantage I saw from XP over 2K pro was the bootup time. That's it. Everything else seems to be much faster and better in Win 2K pro for me. I'll give XP another run once I get more ram. I believe that had something to do with it.
