View Full Version : Do It Yourself IDE Cables?
Anyone know where I can get Do It Myself IDE cable setups? A crimper, the connectors, and the ribbon cable? I have a huge case (2 feet tall) with some funky drive configurations.
your going to want to watch out for extremely long cables.
as they will decrease performance and sometimes create errors

Check some of the local electronics stores. I live near a place called the Electronics Warehouse, it has everything you would ever need in terms of computer connectors, cables, and tools...

Best I know of is Radio Shack. And they suxx0rz. Any place online?
And yeah, I'm aware that IDE cables should be short. But I'm kinda desperate.

I have done it. My stuff came from http://www.jameco.com.
I use a vice, I do not make them enough to buy crimpers.

SUppose you could post a link or two to the specific parts you order? I took a look through, but didn't see what I was looking for.
How critical is it that you get these cable immediately? I don't know any online places but I know a place in Toronto that has a whole snot full of out of the ordinary cables, I'm planning on going to Toronto in February, I could look around there and get you what you're looking for then send it to you, if they have what you need and you're willing to wait.

ribbon cable comes in rolls. (if that helps any) you can buy either IDE or SCSI cable and rip off the extra ribbons.
I've taken several cables apart and relocated their connectors. Take your time and you shouldn't have a problem either.

yea they sell em at frys electronics. :D
It's not critical to get them anytime soon. I've found some online that would be long enough for my purposes.
And the closest thing to Fry's that I have is Radio Shack. And they're useless.

Sorry, went on vacation...
The official name for them is IDC connectors. Jameco is best used by getting the catalog or looking on the pdf version and getting the part numbers. My last order was SCSI, so that is no help. Try on pages 50-53.
Edit: for you, I can do some links:

I think you want part 32678 or 138350

These guys also sell the proper tools, connections, and ribbon wire. Check them out, they are fairly inexpensive from what I have seen. Just my two cents
