View Full Version : I have a problem guys
Ok I came home today and went to check the status of my machines the Tbird was doing well enough but when I hit the button on the KVM switch to check out my duron @ 1050 (140x7.5) the screen was all black which is normal cause I have the monitor shut down after 15min anyway the problem was the machine didnt wake up or atleast the monitor wouldnt wake up but the comp is still running. Now I restarted and found foldmonitor read 120min on the current frame so the comp was running but it wasnt doing anything it was apparently locked up.
I want some feedback as to a possible cause I can run 3dmark2000 in loops without a hitch and Toast for an hour without a hitch I've even ran both at the same time and it was stable or atleast the cpu appears to be stable. I have a refurbished epox 8k7a and a sparkle 300w psu and the stock hsf now I am guessing one of these parts is the problem. CPU is to hot and locks up (load is around 48c-51c via mbm) , mobo is flawed in some way (I dont know its refurbished for some reason) or the psu is to weak (5v rail never below 4.88) causing some stability issues because cant be the overclock...lol.

I had a similar problem. The hard drive was set to shut down after a certain amount of time. Everything was fine until the hard drive powered down then it would never restart. Of course once I set this option to "Never" and all is fine.

I've had problems in the past with shutting off my monitor.. It wouldn't come back up after it shut off the monitor, but was still running. I think it was with win98se... What OS are you running?
S_Wilson the only power man. setting I have enabled is the "turn monitor off" so something must be causing instability after a certain amount of time probably heat.
nil_esh I'm running 2kpro and the comp is still running but not producing it really strange the fans run and everything but there is no production the timer on foldmonitor is still running thats why the monitor read 120min+ on the current frame.
I have backed it down to 138 x 7.5 and I'll just have to wait and see I really think its heat related.

jbslow, you are probably correct with your heat assumption since all of your power settings are disabled except the monitor. 48-51C I thought was on the high side but not extreme. I would bet on the cpu getting hot before the board or psu being flawed. Throttling it back a little like you have done will probably be the cure.
By the way, the foldmonitor display is based on your fahlog. If you complete a frame at 6pm shut down and restart at 9pm, the foldmonitor will show that you have worked on the frame for 180 minutes. Your computer did not work for that long but the last entry in the fahlog will be a frame was completed at 6pm but now it is 9pm. Fah and foldmonitor use your system clock.
It could be heat related. It could have also been working on the protein, but may have lost your keyboard/mouse. This has happened to me before and the log may not reveal much either since my log says it hasn't been updated in 4 hours and I don't know if foldmonitor is always right with that sort of thing. What you can do in that instance is check the times that some of the work files were last updated to find out if the client has been working. Anyway. I was having trouble with my vnc connection to the box so I went to see it manually to see what it was doing and it was black. I then went back up and accessed it through file sharing, which worked. Checked the dates/times for a while and everything was updating just the way it should even though everything else made it appear that it had locked up.
Durons are pretty good about staying cool too.
I had a similar condition with my T-bird box. My problem turned out to be my anti-virus prog. It was set to auto scan every 24 hrs. It would cause the machine to lock-up , which kept the monitor from waking up. It didn't lock-up every time, just every few days. Disabling that feature was the fix for me. Its probably a long shot, but you could check it out.
Merry Christmas
Ploaf are you talking about checking the stats page to see if I'm producing cause I am using a KVM switch and it has locked my key and mouse once before but I thought the comp was just locked so I just rebooted.
andrek I checked and sure enough I did have antivirus auto scanning on friday nights but the lock up I was talking about happened Mon. around noon so it must be something else.
No. I'm assuming that they are networked together. I have file sharing enabled on all of my machines for the fah and a couple of unimportant folders which allows me to use explorer to check the properties of the files in the work folder to see when they were modified. Some files can be hours old because they don't update at all while others will show activity since the last time data was saved, which is different for each protein, but with a duron should not be more than half hour.

Same thing happens to me sometimes on my 450 machine, except that is it still working. Can't get monitor to wake up. At first I was concerned that it wasn't working so I'd reboot. But then once I just let it go and found it was still working. Win 98. Got it set to turn off the monitor after 10 minutes and the hard drive after 15 minutes. It must be smart enought to wake up the hard drive when it needs to.
The 3 are networked so I can check the 450's progress using fold monitor on another machine. It takes a long time to make sure it's working though because the 450 takes 30+ minutes to do a frame on a 100 frame w/u.
Also, even though there's no display, I just push the windows key, then the "u" and then the enter key and it restarts. I don't have to press the reset button. So, I'm real sure it's not locked up.
Well I've been running for 2 days 25 min without a reboot or hitch so I guess it was to hot or maybe just unstable now the load temps are 47c-49c the average for two days is 47c. When I had a sk6 on their I had it up 1064 at the same voltage so I think its time for a better hsf maybe a Glaciator aluminum or a heavy Glaciator I , hmm.
