I'll simply paste what I've posted in another forum that hasn't been much help:

First, the specs:

AMD Athlon 64 3800+ X2 (socket 939)
K8-NF41 Evga mobo (It's the exact same thing as the JetWay J939GT4 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813153069), just re-badged. It was from back when Evga was giving away a mobo free w/ purchase of the 7800GTX)
3 gigs pc-3200 memory
2 SATA hard drives (1 160 gigs, the other 300 gigs)
1 Evga GeForce 7800GTX
on-board sound
Vista Ultimate
and the problem child: the Lite-On SHM-165H6S DVD burner (http://us.liteonit.com/us/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=157&Itemid=67)

Alrighty, here's my problem. For the longest time, this system has been 100% stable. No problems at all. Nothing. I could leave it on for weeks and have no issues. Then out of the blue about two weeks ago, my DVD drive just disappeared. I had the same issue. I went into the device manager and was getting a yellow exclamation mark box and on further details, it said

"This device cannot start. (Code 10)

I look around online as this was a new error for me, and it turns out that it's usually caused by something creating a resources conflict of some sorts. I removed a program I had just installed to create images of my DVD's, rebooted, and BAM! back in business. Now it had started again, just the other day. I've tried pretty much everything I can think of. I uninstalled ANY software even remotely having to do with my DVD drive in safe mode, pulled the drive to set it to master (it was set to cable select, even though there's nothing else on the IDE cable), tried uninstalling it in safe mode and letting it re-install it on normal boot, and still, nothing. It shows up fine in the BIOS, pre-os boot shows it fine & it'll boot from a bootable disc before hitting Vista, but in Vista it just sits there in the Device Manager with a Code 10. It does not show up under Computer either.

Any ideas?

*EDIT*

I fixed it, and for anyone curious, here's how:

Open up REGEDIT and go into HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}. Look for any values marked as "UpperFilters" and "LowerFilters"; if they exist, back up and purge them. Then restart and see what happens.
