View Full Version : worth unlocking?
hey guys, i have a quick question here...
i'm think about unlocking my XP 1700+, but is it worth it?
my mobo will still be stable at 166 FSB i think, so can i just set the FSB at 166, instead of unlocking the cpu to change the multipler?
what do you guys think?
Don't think I wil unlock my XP1600+. I am doing 1400@1643 now which is certainly fast enough for my needs (I am not a gamer). If it were still a simple procedure like the "pencil trick" I would, but don't think it is worth the trouble, or risk, involved with filling the pits.
Just my opinion, Bill :)

i would believe it should come down to system stablity.
will agp and pci busses handle 166fsb? stably?
ive run my xp1600 both ways 10.5x160 and 11x141
i prefer 11x141 ive found it more stable for the moment.
and i still increase my fsb and not risk instablity in my agp or pci
The lower the FSB the better for stability. I personally prefer unlocking. Many times you don't even need a voltage increase. See my signature specs. Filling and scraping the pits is fairly easy as long as you cover the bridge posts, it's connectecing the bridges that is the part that needs major attention to detail.
Good Luck
i put it down to this if u plan on oc later then get what u need sit ur ass down get a magnifing glass a lot of light and calmy unlock it but dont rush ur self and also if u think it MIGHT be touching or u did something wrong (execpt for the glue) then i would get some nail pollish remover and start all over.. i started over 3 times on my T-bird (did it with defogger repair kit) untill i knew for sure it was safe.. but i dont think there are risks if u read all there is to know and do it calmly...

I have a 1600 XP, And i can switch my voltage AROUND All i want.
My voltage - 0.0000
Speed: 1600 XP @ 1800 XP
True Clock: 1400 Tbird at 1555 Tbird
Temp: 109-114
RPM Fan: 4600
HSF: Stock
Case temp: 79-81
Stability: 100%
Okay.....
I can clock my'n over 1600 Tbird (1606 to be precise) But when i clocked to that, I got blue lines when i got into win xp, and it rebooted.. Im thinking because of HEATING Problems. Obviously i need to get a new fan.... The STOCK HSF Is Fine, Im most likely just going to pop a delta fan on there, (2400 rpm's faster then STOCK Fan)
A) Where can i get a delta, in a local store?
Radioshack????
Im wondering if my chip is UNLOCKED, I Can take my voltage wherever, i can clock to probably over 1606 when i get the Delta.. I Also have 3 case fans, And purchasing a exhaust fan....
If you value a few hundred mhz over your chip, GO ahead and unlock, my opinion
DONT UNLOCK
What do you mean DON'T UNLOCK. Everyone who owns a XP wishes theirs was unlocked.
That is the best way to get the MOST out of a chip. Not only do get more headroom, once you are at a higher multiplier you can than start increasing the FSB/voltage and go even higher.
In my opinion, (I have overclocked about every chip I have ever owned ever since the 486 days), blue lines and automatic reboots aren't exactly the signs of a 100% stable system.
Pushing the FSB to 152 ISN'T worth it.
How could you possibly wonder if you chip is unlocked or not????
Did you even try changing the multiplier in the bios?????
That's usually how you find out besides just looking at the L1 bridges under a magnifying glass..
I dunno if it's really worth it. My XP 1800+ is locked and runs nicely at 11.5 x 152.5 MHz or 1754 MHz. With my voltage moded AK31 the core is at 2.0 volts and it runs nice and cool at 40C idle and 45C load (49C Prime95).
