question about hard drives

is it possible to swap hard drives while the computer is running?
cuz i wanna test some drives real quick without shutting my computer down and turning it back on and stuff.
would it damage the drives/computer whent hey are plugged in when the power is already on?

i was thinking about that too the other day. i think there is a way you can make devices hot swappable in windows. you would have to have 1 other hdd that would always stay connected though, i think (probably). that would be interesting if you could do that.experimentation should not prove fatal, i think it should be no worse then if the power went out.

There are hot swap bays for hard drives, but by themselves they are not hot swap.
