ok this confuses me. i just bought a new us robotics external modem and my ping in games has jumped up 40ms :( i thought this thing was supposed to be faster.
i flashed the modem bios but it didnt help.
i found out though that if you flash the bios on this modem it now supports v.92 hehe
but why are my games slower?

Ok...it's been a while for me and dial modems, but here's a couple of shots in the dark (hope I don't offend you if this is too basic)...
- Make sure your connection [line] speed is greater than or equal to your old modem
- Make sure your COM port settings are more than 9600
- Make sure flow control is hardware (or none)
- Make sure you're using the latest drivers (for V.92) for the Robotics
- Make sure the modem on the other side is V.92 and V.PCM compatible
- Make sure your upstream and downstream speeds are comparable to your old modem (I think they're adjustable according to V.PCM specs)

Well...That's all I've got. Good luck.

This may sound weird, but have you connected the phoneline through a surge protector? I'm not sure what it did for my ping, but switching surge protectors increased my downloads by ~174% (23kbs to 40-42kbs). It was the same modem as yours, and needless to say, I was ecstatic

it puts a constant electric current through the line going to the computer not a high voltage only a few milliamps, and it really helps!! :)

i dont have it on a surge protector cuz i heard it really slows it down.
