I am planning on gettinga 2000 or a 2200XP, and wondering from the people unlocking them how hard it actually is. I read the review at Toms and they make it look easy, but is it.
Is it possible to actually damage the chip while unlocking it.
They suggest supergluing the trench the using Laquer to make your connections.
Thanks
How about somthing easier (http://forums.overclockers.ws/vb/showthread.php?threadid=53394)?
First of all don't buy a 2000 XP get a 1500+ or a 1600+ they are much cheaper and will overclock higher than the 2000 probably will. I paid $110.00 for my XP1600+ and unlocked it and it is running solid at 1900+ (1600Mhz)
Now , about the difficulty of unlocking. I spent about 2-3 hours unlocking mine mostly because I like to do things right and took my time. The principle is easy to understand by watching Tom's video but the practice of it is very tedious. You must have patience and ablility to work on small things. It is very easy to cross the bridges so extra care must be taken to tape these off before connectiong them.
I used superglue on the pits and a very sharp razor blade to level it flush with the surface of the chip and CircuitWorks conductive ink pen to connect the bridges. The conductive material is important as it must have ZERO resistance for a connection to be made. I tested the resistance of the conductive ink on a multimeter in the store before I bought it to make sure. Read some of the other posts here about unlocking failures. Most are probably due to one of 3 things:
1. Cross bridging
2. Improper coductive material
3. Shorting under the pits.
You can ruin a chip trying to do this !!!
Mine run great at every multplier, dipslaying the FSB, multiplier,Mhz and PR rating at POST
