any real differences other than one being modular?

would like to know and perhaps buy one of these for my new system based on gigabyte p35 d3sl, 7800gt video, 2gb ram and e4300 cpu, 2 dvd drives 3 hd's.

Different OEM (HX-Seasonic, VX-CWT), but similar in quality, pretty much.
Go with either one.

I just posted in the cyber deals a 550vx for roughly $60 compared to the 520hx thats roughly $100

I'd go with the VX series. It is based on an excellent CWT platform, is independently regulated and best of all, it is super affordable!

Spectre (Paul Johnson) a member here does the PSU Reviews at [H] and he performed an exhaustive test, pitting these two units against each other. Both performed very very well, but I'd go with the VX for the indy regulation.

Go with the VX.

I just installed my HX520 and couldn't be happier, but for the price that one is indeed a no brainier.

afraid i purchased the hx 520 already.. :(No big loss. Well, $40 loss, but that's not big, considering either of these are a fine choice (and you get modular, :shrug:)

Word. Modular cables are a great help for wire management.
