View Full Version : Is there any hope???
I just popped this hd into my download server cos it only had a 10Gb hdd in it.
It was found in the BIOS and Windows could see it fine but when i tried to open it it tried to make me format it. So I clocked yes as i didn't mind wiping it but then the progress bar on the formatting tool didn't move. I left it for a good half hour and nothing.
I then decided to run the HDtune error scan on it and heres what I got.

Is there any way of making it work again???
thanks in advance
im doing a full scan now and its looking even worse. Will upload pick when its finished.
I pulled this drive from a working PC about a month ago and its been in an anti static bag until this afternoon when i decided to use it.

Wow... I thought the first one was from a full scan until I looked more closely. That drive is pretty thoroughly toast, and attempting to put anything else on it will be a massive waste of time. The good news is since it's only a 20gig drive, finding a replacement shouldn't be too difficult or expensive. Just look around the classifieds for a used 20-40gig IDE drive.
Bad news for me though is my work comp uses that very same drive and our crappy Compaq machines have zero cooling. I wonder how long it'll keep running at 50C :(

Darn...ah well...worth a try.
Its not rele much of a problem replacing it....probs got one lying around here sumwhere. Its just that wel....20gb is 20gb and it could have been usefull.
I would be carefull if i were you with that drive. No idea if its the build quality of the drive or a one off problem.

Just a quick FYI, a virus could cause that kind of reading. Not likely, but possible..

Possible, but pretty unlikely as it stalled during a format. You could try running DBAN on the drive with at least 1 full pass (if it makes it all the way) and then scan again. If you can get a full over-write via DBAN on it and you're still seeing red, a virus wouldn't be an issue and the drive could be declared very-dead.

Eh, if it dies I'll just have the IT guys get me a new drive. Since I back up everything to our RAID-5 server I won't lose much if it dies on me.
ITS A MIRACLE!!! I wrote 0s to the whole disk and now its working perfect....strange thing is that its got a faster STR now :D...only like 5mb/s more but I, not complaining lol
