So I decided to reformat rig 2 in my sig after lapping the E4300 and installing the Zalman 9700. Everything goes fine, I install video and chipset drivers.

Turn off the computer and pop in the Chaintech AV-710 (Envy24 chipset) to finally replace the onboard sound I've been using on it since I got it. Windows recognizes the new multimedia-audio controller device, I cancel that prompt. Install with my own drivers, restart to complete the setup.

No volume icon in the taskbar, go to Control Panel->Sounds and Audio Devices and apparently it's not seeing the sound card. I uninstall and try two other older drivers for the sound card, all to no success. At that point I didn't care anymore and decided to just run onboard sound.

So I install the Realtek HD audio drivers downloaded off of Asus' website. Restart and I get the same thing, when I go to Sound and Audio Devices it shows up as no audio device being present. My Comp->Device Manager doesn't show the onboard audio either.

I'm gonna go try things again right now, hopefully someone can give me some insight here though cause I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.

When trying to install onboard audio, usually it's important to have the 'Onboard Audio' option in the BIOS set to 'Enabled'. :bang head:

At least I got it finally working .

Also got the AV-710 working with the original CD I got from Chaintech with the card, none of the drivers on the internet would work.

Did you ever figure out what was causing these problems for you? I have the same issue with my P5N-D. I installed the Asus Audio drivers for the Realtek HD Audio chip and then everything appears normally in Device Manager.

Whenever I try to play anything or try to adjust any settings, XP claims that I do not have any audio devices. So I tried uninstalling the Asus Realtek Drivers and that didn't help either. When I try to remove the Realtek Audio Device from Device Manager I get a message stating that I cannot remove it and it might be required to start the computer.

Anyone have any ideas?

Answer is right here. I had Onboard Audio set to Disable in the BIOS without realizing it.

What you're describing is exactly what I was getting.

The problem that caused all this for me was the Envy24 drivers I downloaded off the internet, they plain didn't work at all. I forgot I had disabled onboard audio when I put the sound card in, so when I went back to trying to use the onboard audio I got the 'no audio device' problem. I forgot to re-enable onboard audio :bang head. I tried a number of Envy24 audio drivers that i downloaded and nothing worked until I found the original Chaintech CD that came with the card.

Mine was on, this was purely a S/W issue. This turned out to be the fix....
