ok here is my story, i currently own a creative 5.1 w/o the break out box. im wanting to buy a break out box. my only problem is the optical connector for creative is in the front. i like the hercules because it is not enclosed inside the case. it would be cheaper for me to just buy the break out box from creative. but buying the hecules would save me alot of hassle.
sound quality i awsome on 5.1, but people with experience on hercules. give me your opinion please.
thanks in advance

are you saying that if you buy the add-on breakout box (i'm assuming you have an audigy card) that it doesn't include an optical out? or did i miss something? if that's the case, my plan just got shot to heck
What he is saying so far is that he needs an optical connection, the problem is that he cant buy the breakout box for the creative card, at least not one with an optical connection...so Now he wants to know if the hercules XP sound card and cool blue (pepsi blue i think) breakout box would be a good replacement.
From what I have heard, in Tribes 2 ( alot of people have the hercules) is that the sucker has more connections the the creative cards, not sure about the new audigy platium...though...the hecules has VERY good quality..people have been know so hear the footsteps of cloaked people in T2....thats how good it must be...i think i will get an audigy and a hercules for the systems im going to build....just to compare...:D

I have not heard any problems with the Hercules XP theatre. I too was in the same position as you and would get the XP Theatre if I were still in the market for a "breakout box".
I have never read a bad review of the XP theatre and the prices are definitely cheaper than the Soundblaster platinum. Check newegg for the OEM version which can be had for about $100.00.

jstutman: where did you see the add-on boxes for sale on the net? i'm curious to see exactly what the drive adds to the front of the computer in the 5.25 bay, being that you said it's different than the one that comes with the audigy platinum. tia
