I'm going to build a computer for my aunt. She wants a Radeon 7500 so getting her that. She wants to surf the web and do a bit of archeticture type stuff on it. How does this sound
antec 830 case, 1ghz t-bird or 1ghz Duron?, sis 735 mobo, 256mb ddr ram crucial?(a bit hight right now), 40 gb hdd ibm 60xp or maxtor, quantum, pioneer dvd rom, intergrated sound, and probably a cable modem... anything I should change on this?
I'm not sure that a duron would make the 7500 worthwhile maybe a little.....
anything I should add etc.
Thanks
The price between and 1.4 tbird and a 1gig isn't that much really.
the bird has more l1 cache, so i'd go with that.
the antec case is great because you get an antec powersupply with it.
make sure she has a decent cooler.
what brand of motherboard are you going for??

just go ahead and make it 1.4 tbird instead of a 1gig (like thefly said, not much price difference). doesnt doing archeticture type stuff require a lot of ram (i dont know, just seems like would)? i would say instead of 256 go ahead and make it 384 or 512. for the mobo, look at what socket A Shuttle has to offer; they make cheap and decent motherboards(FIC is also good and cheap). for storage, would recommend seagate's barracuda IV 40 gig, 7200rpm. its fast, reliable, and silent. for cooler get the noisecontrol silverado. for the case, i would look for something cheaper, like $30; afterall, its not like shes an "extreme" computer user (or is she?), and is going to be modding, or opening of the case frequently. . .everything else looks good.
not that theres neccesarily anything wrong w/ your setup, its just what i would do.

Well, If this Barracuda is as silent and reliable as mine... Itīs very good.... Of course IBM are sweet to... But about realiability Iīdnīt go with quantum... My 3 last ones all died... the last one just 1 month after the warranty  This Seagate Barracuda 10.2 Gb 7200 rpm I bought some time ago disnīt ever had a bad block and itīs very silent... and off course, noticeably faster than my Last 5400 rpm of course... Maybe the $0 Gb Barracuda be Cheapper.... About the CPu, if the price isnīt much more, go fore a 1.3- 1.4 ... She īs not probably going to Upgrade frequently no? If Not, just spende the $50 more on a computer that will last some year "longer".... If OPossible, 512mb will be sweety... Donīt Know what exactly she uses, but.... Siletn fans seems good Idea... (She wouldnīt like my delta 38 :) )

Taken from the fact that she specified that she wanted a Radeon 7500 i would say she knows more than you guys are giving her credit for. She may not be opening the case, but it sounds like she knows a bit more than your average "guy-who-buys-a-dell-with-a-P4-because-it-has-big-numbers".

id actually go the duron 1gig, or 1.2
they run as fast as the tbirds at a much cooler temp
256mb will be enough for a decent system, but grabbing the 512 would be handy if shes running 2k or XP
I see as of 6/11 newgg.com has
AMD XP1800+ $99
kingston 512mb DDR $102
MSI 2k7 MOB $65
why not give her some guts
how much $$$ is going for
and were do you get you parts there is a big range in the prices

Guys, please explain to me why we would recommend a T-bird cooker over the same price for an xp1600?:(
He can spend the same dollar amount for a cooler running, more powerful processor that takes better advantage of xp software enhancements. With no oc'ing, a slower running fan may be used on an adequate cooling solution for peace and quite while she works. Furthermore a less expensive heatsink may be used.
